WA driver dies after trailer disconnects

A man has died after a trailer carrying quad bikes disconnected from another vehicle and hit his truck south of Perth.

The 55-year-old man was driving on the Brookton Highway in Kelmscott on Friday when a trailer carrying quad bikes hit his vehicle.

The trailer had been hitched to a caravan being towed by a ute when it disconnected and crossed to the other side of the road, police say.

RIP to the man who was killed

I was under the impression, that you were not allowed to tow a trailer, behind a caravan, which was being towed by a vehicle

It will be interesting to see the outcome of the person responsible

On the latest advice released by police it appears that someone chose to be too selfish to have any concerne for the safety of others. Neil

we  also express our sympathy for the family of the victim.

I do not know how many times we have been illegally passed by car motorist.

As I always say. "Never a cop when you need one."

Yet one can get booked for doing around 70 in a 60 speed zone. With virtually zero chance of an accident, or running the amber light which is suppose to mean be prepared to stop on the Red.

They drive amongst us.

Whilst I agree with your sentiments JD I would suggest you get some confirmatoin of your definition of the meaning of the amber light.

It doesn't matter how skilled a driver you are, you can follow all the road rules and guidelines, adjust your speed to suit the conditions but that doesn't stop you being killed by an idiot. I was driving in the slow lane a few weeks ago on an 80km section of the Pacific Hwy near Catherine Hill Bay (NSW) if anyone is familiar with that area it's where the mine subsidence has deformed the road surface. I was overtaken on a bend by a guy in the fast lane driving a Grand Cherokee with a very large van in tow he had to be doing at least 110ks. if anyone knows this section of road they will know the risk that he was posing not only to himself but to all the other road users at the time. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of this poor guy.

Yes you get booked for exceeding the speed limit. Do not see what this has to do with the tragedy in question. If they were illegally towing I hope they get the book thrown at then.

Does not take anything away from anyone getting booked for doing more than the speed limit.

watching the local TV news tonight showing the aftermath of this disaster, there was no sign of any caravan or mention of one. Perhaps it was an early scoop from a rookie reporter.

It was amazing that what looked like an F250 ute smashed headon to a large truck, killing the driver of the latter.

The dead driver shared a house with another guy - his family live overseas.

RIP Steggles driver

The police press release said it was a trailer containing 4 wheel motor bikes being towed behind a caravan being towed with a ute. It appears the ute and carvan stopped well past the carnage.

I saw on last nights news, that it wasn't a caravan that the trailer came detached from after all,

It was a dirty great 5th wheeler, but still illegal to tow anything behind, as far as I know.

Hi what I saw on the 7news on Friday night it looks like towed by 5th wheeler, now i could be corrected.
Not much has been printed in Saturdays West Australian or today's Sunday Times, just a few short paragraphs. Maybe the driver had a Mc licence and thought it was all ok I don't know.
Was the towed trailer a pig or dog trailer, if it was it could turn out be legal as per road train or pocket road train depending on factors. Any way all will come out in enquiry. My sincere condolences to the truck drivers family. As I wrote I could well be corrected on all points.

Ps: I see by the pic it's a duel wheeled pig trailer, lets all wait for the enquiry.
