Barossa and Flinders

Hi all. We are heading for Barossa Valley and Flinders Ranges in November for a few weeks. Any heads up on the best free camp sites in those areas ? We are fairly new to free camping so any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

I intend to go that way also soon...but in the meantime I'll drink to that.

Hi Colin, we have not camped in the Barossa Valley. However, if you travel to Parachilna (western side of the ranges) and turn right you can have a wonderful experience free camping in the Parachilna Gorge. It can also be accessed from Blinman (eastern side of the ranges). I would return there in a heartbeat if the opportunity presented.
cheers,
Robyn

We live in the Barossa and it's not great for free camping, there is a cheaper caravan park at Williamstown that is fairly basic but would be okay. Otherwise there is a park in Tanunda and one in Nuriootpa ( I think this is the better of the 2) Lots of places in the Flinders to camp or cheaper rates for the national parks.

We stayed for several days at the Kapunda caravan park. It is a lovely town and the park was reasonably priced and very pleasant. Just a short drive to the wineries.

Thanks for your input guys. Are 'guys' still politically correct here ? Parachilna Gorge sounds and looks great. blankstare I am only new to free camping so what is wrong in the Barossa ? confuse

I think I know the place at Truro , we have often stopped there on the way to the Riverland but wouldn't fancy staying or leaving my van there. I think the best option for the Barossa if you want to visit wineries is to park yourself in a caravan park at least for a night, get in early before lunch have a look around , stay the one  night if you dont want to pay too much then look around the next day and go out further to free camp, quite a  few good free camps heading to the Flinders. Sometimes you just have to pay if you want to see a specific area. We just spent four months on the West Coast , parks and free camps and now any parks in SA look very good value for money!

Hi Colin, We did your trip the other way round in 20l4. In the Barossa we stayed at Greenock Reserve. Camp around the sports oval. Gold coin donation, Toilets and water available and only 0k from Nuriootpa so very central. If you do the Clare Valley we stayed at the Auburn Reserve. Run by the Local Assoc. [ I think ]. Powered sites, showers and toilets. Great spot. There is a free camp outside Quorn at Warren Gorge. Toilets and great site. There is a place called Arkaroo Rock just before Wilpena Pound that has good free campsites. We stayed at Willoe Springs Campground whilst un the Flinders mainly because we could take the dog, but in hindsite think we would have stayed there anyway. Depending which way you come home we stayed at Carrieton, a campground at the old school run by the locals. Power water, showers toilets even a washing machine. We free camped at Peterborough before that as we came down the Darling River. Have fun.
