What do others do for internet, phone, coverage?

  1. Hi, we need to get a plan for our internet and phones as we are doing a big lap for a year.  We would like to know what others do  and  which have the best deal in respect to coverage and price.Telstra? Optus? we are not very computer savvy and are appreciative of any advice. :) thanks

Gooday,

Telstra are by far the best you will coverage with them in most places where you will miss out with others, for both Phone & Internet.

Do your research and if possible go to a Telstra owned shop not a franchisee, and push them hard for a good deal.

We have a 4G modem that you can charge from your laptop, and there are some good plans for your mobile with lots of calls included. It can be a bit daunting if you are not up with it, so get some quotes and discuss them with other Family or someone you know who is savvy with this stuff.

Cheers,

 Bliss On Wheels.

Hi Mux 1
we just upgraded our plans with Telstra and we got:
Mobile Phone plan $60pm unlimited calls & SMS plus 10GB of data
Internet plan $60pm with 10GB of data

Combined that gives up 20gb per month

Hope this information helps

I am with you Dave but unfortunately when we get out there in the playground we will be getting back into bed with them. They are they only ones who can give us decent coverage all over .........If I was just doing the major cities then by all means stay with anyone else........I have been using iinet ...... But only for another year or so

I'm like you mate. In one regard
I've been with Telstra for over 40 yrs. And wouldn't go anywhere else.

Had a few hiccups.
but they still the only one to give reasonable service pretty much everywhere.

Internet $79 PM 200gig. can access it from any hub.
Di's phone #30 for 2 months. ALL calls worldwide.15c per minute
and I can transfer cash paid on my acc't across to her balance.

Me. $30 pm. $700 calls at std price, plus $670 bonus
and around a gig of that other stuff with keyboard which I've never used.
Phone is phone. and Tablet does the rest.
You polite to them they polite back and can never do enuff for me I find.

Back to Footie.
Cowboys tonight.
Bronc's tomorrer.

QUEENSLANDERS............

I had bad experiences with Telstra for our home phone and internet and don't anymore use them for that.   But for travelling, unless you stick to the east coast and major cities, Telstra is really the best choice as their coverage is by far the best.

Pay the extra for data . Or the amount you may use ? It can be extended. Don't go over its a lot more expensive , .. Not much reception through the centre ( Stuart High Way ) away from main towns . Nullarbor is fine . Just look out for towers . We camped when we had reception . Much the same on west coast also ., sat internet is too expensive . Oh yes Telstra .

QUEENSLANDERSSSSSSSSSSSsssssss.

Guess who got the points again.
At least the Dog's played foorie this time.
Last game with them was a farce
34-0...
And they supposed to be "professional footballers"

Telstra.

I don'tknow why some people have so much trouble with them

They'vestuffed up a coupla times with them.
First time Di got $800 creditand huge apology.
Second time it was my phone. Actually MY phone physically.
But they still apologised and gave me coupla hundred credit.

Internet has been up and down for an ADSL2+ service.
But last 2 months only been $44.5 per bill. (1\2)
Till the service is fixed according to the Tech services. and full of apology.

You couldn't find a better serviceI reckon.
I did try coupla others a few yrs ago.
First handset is in the sea off Cooktown Jetty at full arm throw radius.
(About 25yrs ago)
Second landed on rail line. Just b4 train went over it.
Out of car window between Moorabbin and the point. at the Entrance.
Going for Cray Dinner for Di's 60th. Cray was nice.

Our experience says Telstra every time.  And when we were in remote places in WA there were often mines nearby that allowed connection  which suprised us. Also some Queensland towns eg  Chillagoe  are only supported by Telstra.

Hi MUX1,

In response to the part of your question about which carrier to use, last year we did Brisbane, Goondiwindi, Nindigully Pub, St. George, Mitchell, Morven, Charleville and then returned via Mitchell, Roma, Miles, Condamine, Goondiwindi, Warwick to Brisbane. At that time we were using Amaysim which uses the Optus 4G network. ABSOLUTELY BL..dY useless.

Returned home, rung Telstra and changed back (reluctantly) to them to be able to get better coverage.

In my opinion, if you are going to travel west of the Great Dividing Range, then Telstra is the only choice (short of Sat. phone). I would suggest that you google Optus mobile coverage map for the above region and have a look at the limited coverage and you will see what I mean. Then compare with Telstra coverage map. Another good Region to do a comparison is the Capricorn Highway from Rocky to Longreach.

I could give many more examples for between Brisbane and Perth if needed.

N.B. No affiliation with Telstra.

Tones

As A follow up. We just got back from a tour of Qld. Live in Brisbane. Went north via inland to Cairns to see the son. Went to Cooktown then across the Gulf country. Down to Mount Isa. South through to Birdsville ( getting ready for the races.) Then back through Quilpie Mitchell etc back to Brisbane. We swapped 12 months ago to iinet and had pretty good coverage for a lot of the way. Ok there may not have been coverage between some of the towns but I was amazed how good it was. And boy was there some beautiful country on the way

Just updated my plan. Optus month to month. Mobile $50 11Gb + unlimited phone calls and SMS. Added a $30 Data Pack 10Gb. + one off $5 for an extra Sim for my iPad so I don't have to hotspot. Total = $80 a month for 21Gb with unlimited everything with no lock-in contract. Always get reception but I always follow the coast.

Tetra for us every time. Great coverage and never had an issue that was not resolved to our satisfaction.

It's 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other, we have found.

Only coverage at Tin Can Bay (QLD) was with Telstra, Rainbow Beach was hit and miss with everyone; Imbil (QLD) was Telstra on a good day, Sunshine Coast was the same deal as Imbil. Out here near Roma, Telstra is iffy, Optus rules. From coastal Victoria to Brisbane, Optus were fine.

We have prepaid phones with Telstra (hit and miss as they are, we have a better chance of getting reception with them). Internet is postpaid with Virgin (Optus).

MUX1 to give the right advice we would need to know how you are going to use the internet and phone is it an Iphone are you using an ipad or laptop for internet and phone just to make phone calls . We are on a $30 a month for mobile with all calls free and free sms but no internet download , For internet we have a Telstra prepaid sim card for our IPAD $140 for 16 gb. which can last 2 years if you don't use much and can be recharged online anytime you have a signal .

Thanks brickies, was thinking of inquiring from telstra if this was possible. Seems like cheapest for us, as we will still have to pay for home internet plan with Optus while travelling as cancelling will incur enormous costs. Will go with Telstra for phone and pre paid internet ;) itching to get going 1 more month and we'll be on our way.. thanks guys
