Towing

I have a 2014, 3Ltr Nissan Patrol (automatic), I would like to pull a New Age 18' van which weighs just a little over two (2) tonne empty. Can anyone tell me if my Nissan will pull it  or not, I will be at my max. 2.5 tonne capacity.  I have enhanced my Nissan with a Stein Bauer module, it would be appreciated if anyone has towed a caravan of this weight or am I looking fir trouble.  Some of the dealers I have spoken to say that I will be fine.

Welcome to the gang Bigdog, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I noticed you posted a similar question back in October in the 'Techie" section of this great forum and got a few replies.

I would think if you say you will be "at max. 2.5 tonne capacity" it is a little close to the bone really and could overwork your Patrol. I'm surprised as I thought the Patrol was a good tower capable of heavier weights.

I tow with a Colorado auto twin cab ute that says 3.5t max but only comfortably tow 2.6t so well under and I wouldn't like to go over 3t as I reckon the Collie would be overworked. IMO.

In short, I reckon you will overwork the Patrol. IMO.

Hi.

Unfortunately the Patrol AUTO is derated to 2.5ton.
The Manual is comfortable with up to up 3.2ton.
I towed a 2.7 to 3.1 ton van (depending on water in tanks) for over 13 yrs with mine.
Never missed a beat. Normally 5.7/5.8 ton combined, over local scales.
plus giving great economy.
9+ KMPL as car. Av 6.3/6.5 KMPLwith van on.
All at road speeds. less on hills.

If you install a Torque Converter lockup it improves the towing no end.
There are a few if you go on net.
I got one for my D-Max from Wholesale Auto's, but again. cheaper on net.
and proven.  Type in "Patrol Converter lockups."

OR look in the Patrol Forums................

Vehicle capable of comfortably towing 3 ton.
Auto is problem.
Nomad valve pack and Converter lock up.
Would make a different veh out of it.

Either upgrade or change for manual. either will do.

with Converter valve pack the cheaper way.
and for that weight.

Patrol the best on market in it's tow range.
for reliability and economy.

As , Macka said, the vehicle will tow the van extremely well. It has the same mechanicals as the manual model with the exception of the gear box. Many of our members towed vans over the 3,000 kg weight quite successfully. The thing you have to respect is the gear box and limit your tug to towing 2,500 kg.

Oh.

If you go the Valve/Conv,. lockup way.

When they do it. ask for a transm "FLUSH".

Not just the service oil change volume. Partial drain only.

and make sure it full Synthetic oil.

Don't believe a Dealer if theyre trying to sell you a 'van ! They would tell a Mini owner they can safely tell a tandem 'van (ok an exaggeration, but you get the point).

You could try going to a couple of Nissan dealers and talking to their service managers who know Patrols and theyre almost always mechanics in their own right as well

Go on the "Patrol Forums"

You'll get more details there about your Patrol
and what to do about the transm.
with what.

No matter what you tow. That model WILL tow better with a Converter Lockup.

The Nomad.or other, valve blocks just give better oil flow with sharper changes.
Not really necessary with your weight tow.

Funny story I took my auto Nissan Patrol GQ to a Nissan dealer because the auto was behaving strangely and the problem was when it had to come out of lockup, The head mechanic said they don't have lockup on GQ's. I said are you serious he even asked others in the workshop and nobody had a clue.

The better valve body is a good idea and their is a lot of info on the patrol 4x4 forum about it, I ended up converting mine to manual and it was the best decision I ever made. It was done 8 years ago and haven't had one issue
