NSW Licence in QLD

Posted on whirlpool is a good question as a gent works in Brisbane but travels From NSW daily got done for speeding lost 4 demerit points in QLD had all demerits prior first offence on full licence.

Now QLD have issued him with a licence cancellation for 3 months because he hasn't updated his licence to QLD even though they know he lives in NSW. This ban is only that he cannot drive on QLD roads.

This world has gone mad like we live in one country called Australia. What if you are a grey nomad and this happened, legally can you have a NSW licence and say a QLD rego if you have no fixed address. Like you live on the road.

That's a good point - don't think it's fair he got his licence cancelled in QLD - how can that happen? As you say - this is one country - our licences should be Australia wide, as should our registrations - and the revenue used for Australia wide road improvement - we had corrugations on the Bruce Highway below Calliope the other day!!!!!

My son-in-law had a similar situation where his Victorian Licence was still OK in all states except SA. Some of the traffic offences he'd been booked for in SA were not offences in Vic so they never made their way onto his Vic demerits. He couldn't drive in SA until some points expired. One Country! I wish.

I think you need a fixed address thru which you can be contacted. How else can you be contacted if your van or car is stolen?

I think from watching RBT on TV , Licence cancelation does follow you from state to state , An the on board computers on the police cars also pick up cancelations from interstate .

With all due respect your answer has zero to do with the question, I don't speed nor have I been booked since mid 80's. I also know your points follow you from state to state. What I was asking is if you live on the road permanently say in a Motorhome which I will be doing shortly, So I will have no fixed address and I get done by a camera in QLD for speeding so I lose 4 points. Now I have a NSW Licence well do they treat me like the original poster and suspend me for 3 months because I have a NSW licence.

Under the conditions above could I have a NSW licence and have a registered QLD motorhome?? Really this opens up a can of worms if this is the law now in different states as I know they are getting tougher on changing rego and licences over when you reside in their state over a certain period.

Is it possible to have no real address when having a licence or do you have to nominate one, Say children, PO box etc. What if you have no children or relatives. What do the homeless do??

Also anyone who thinks that they obey the law 100% is kidding themselves as in the 30+ years without an offence I have been lucky on a few occasions, But yes I stick to speed limits unless I miss one which is easy to do as they change regularly, Many times the GPS doesn't agree with the speed limit sign so you have to be on your guard all the time.

Maybe I didn't put my point across properly in the first place?

Allan.

If you get a ticket for speeding.
Normally.. You have. believe it or not.

Regarding licences and vehicles.

I don't know about NSW. (Never been to. only travelled through just stop for juice only)

Normally unless you just delivering a veh, you have to match. Veh/caravan with licence.
And if towing.
Ensure rego/ins, as well as Comp Ins, are compatable with whichever company.

Some don't cover mismatched items

I know a Vict trailer. van.5th wheeler, Can't be towed by interstate veh 'legally"
as their third party cover on all trlrs is covered by T.P on car..
(I lived there for a while)

I know my insurance told me I could tow interstate caravan home from interstate.
AS LONG AS IT WAS REGISTERED CURRENTLY in that State.
but had to change rego/ins within 30 days.
Police the same info too.

That has been law in most States for a loong time now.
You move anywhere. 30 days grace. then fine and ins no cover.

Best thing is to use family member to allow you to use their address as home base.
and you just touring for ( n1/2/3/4/5 ? yrs.)
They accept that.
I kept my rego in Vict for over 10 yrs for both.
Till I forgot to renew car one yr and drove it round Aust, for whole yr with no rego on it.
Whoops. Lucky no acidents or check stops.

Hi Murraman. It is based on where you are domiciled. You might live in NSW and be in another state for short term work or a holiday. If your domicile stays the same, you are within the law driving on that NSW licence. The same principle applies to taxation. When you work overseas, even if there is no taxation law or tax free, you still pay tax in Australia for that sum earned as your domicile is still Australia.

In relation to licence suspensions interstate, the usual procedure is that the state that removed your licence notifies the state that issued your licence who then suspend you on the basis that you are not a fit and proper person to hold a licence, based on your interstate suspension or disqualification. This was the norm when truck drivers held numerous licences to cover the risk of losing a licence in one state and driving on another state licence until the suspension period passed.

If you move interstate, the traffic  rules allows three months to obtain the new state's licence.

If you are caught driving on an interstate licence that has been suspended or disqualified there is a separate offence of driving whilst unlicensed whilst suspended or disqualified interstate. That carries a mandatory disqualification that then prevents you from driving in that state as well.

Hope that answers your question. Happy travels.

Hand on heart you have NEVER driven over the speed limit intentionally or unintentionally. If the answer is yes, you are either unique or a liar.

As Murraman said this is not what this topic is about.

Not sure if this helps but. In 2014 I was in Townsville staying in a camper trailer in my daughters back yard for a 2 month visit. I bought a 'new' car. I had a VIC licence and to get car registered I had to give daughters address and had 3 months to change my licence to QLD. Not wanting to do that I left a month later and when crossed into VIC changed to VIC rego and with my VIC address. Last year in Townsville I got booked for a silly thing and lost 2 points. They came off my VIC licence and go wherever I am. I think, for 3 years.
