NEW Honda eu20I generator

We are going to buy a brand NEW Honda eu20I generator.

Now we have check the internet and Ebay and the best price we can get is $1799.

Nothing in our area of any top value on Gumtree.

A ring a round to local dealers also reveal that the best price is ..you guessed it   $1799.

We were able to gain info from one dealer that Honda do not like their dealers to sell below a certain as price as it would be a disadvantage to other dealers. If this is proved to be correct one could then rightly assume that it is PRICE FIXING and that is a no no in Australia. It cost 2 large paper manufactures millions some years ago for this illegal practice.

We have survived on a el cheapo gennie for a number of years but now causing problems.

So now we still intend to buy the Honda brand.

Anyone know of a better price on the Eu20?

Bugger it   S.K.I. we say.

Over priced generators, pull one apart & you will be amazed at how cheaply they are made. Plastic gears & timing belt, rocker arms pressed tin.

Hi Jay&Dee,
While price fixing is illegal it is common. All dealers of big brands have "recommended" retail price only. BUT the big brands have other ways of 'enforcing' compliance of the prices. Good luck getting that changed. cry
When the cheap manufacturers get their act together and produce a good reliable product that is as good as the big two then it will achieve a reduction in price. Perhaps they are getting close now !!biggrin

Jay&Dee here

After reading information on this forum re the Honda and Yamaha 2000 models, it is obviously an problem with both these models when we are touring in extreme heat. Both of them shut down when it is very hot weather.

So after further research it could well be worth considering the Yammie  EF 2400 IS and I have a price of $1999  from a local dealer.

It appears that this model will handle the heat and maybe the better option albeit a couple of $$$$ extra.

But a much heavier unit at 32 kgs  v 20 kg for the smaller unit.

Any further comments would be appreciated

Hi J&D, I have had my Honda 20i in 40c+ and had no problem. It runs my ibis 3 aircon without any problems at the same time but I don't use anything else while air is on unless 12v.

Had Honda. Overpriced.
Self drive lawnmower and trimmer good though.

Have Chinese unit with Honda "export" engine in it. 3.8kva
$470ish a few yrs ago now.
Their electronics have moved on a bit nowadays.

Mate (chippie on sites) put me on to them,
he uses them on site all day every day. Synthetic oils and regular service.
He gets on average 3 to 3 1\2 yrs b4 selling on.
No problems. Just "in case".
At that price they near free.

32kg. but rear wheels and extending handle. Plus centre handle.
But I don't carry it to far

Runs My van and Aircond. with mates van alongside. Also with Inverter Aircond
Mine soft start.

My van by itself. Aircond lights. tv. Microwave elect stove. and or kettle.

Got fed up figuring which to put on first.
This one does near the lot at once. sits in Ute tray and behaves itself.
and the price of a good bottle of single Malt.
Although this Glenfarclas I'm on now is sweet at $100/150 a pop
depending on yr.
Other mate is a collector. He just bought (at auction) a bottle for $1300.
and said that's only a fraction of what some go for,
he's paid over 4 grand for some.

Sorry, off course.
Forgive me.
But the generator does give the comfort to sit and relax over a nice glass of something or other.

ALL related hey.

Update re our project of buying a generator.

We finally settled on a Honda EU20 I from a local dealer.

Cost was $1799 which included the dust cover, security locked chain & tin of Oil.

I was all for replacing our old el cheappie but SWMBO. had her heart set on the Honda.

I guess that at the end of the day...  I do not have to lug around a heavier unit than the Honda.

As the saying goes.... age does weary them... the them being ME.

Our thanks to all for your input into this thread.

Very much appreciated.

Happy Days

Hi All

I have a Honda 20i for 7 years.   Paid $1750 at Melb Caravan Show.  Has been serviced every 100 hrs, no major troubles. It is advisable, however, to maintain fresh fuel  in the tank, otherwise it can take a few extra pulls of the rope to get it started.

I would have no hesitation in purchasing another one when I  need to.  Wel worth the  money.  The equivalent Yamaha is also good.

Happy caravanning

The equivalent Yamaha only has one power outlet unlike the Honda 2oi which has two......salesman rarely mention this.....I have complete faith in my Honda 2Kva....since I carried a Blue Kipor 2 Kva for 2 years and it dropped its piston on 2nd use....just after warranty...$1400 odd for a bag of Chinese garbage...tested it once when bought and 2 years later when I really needed it..it died on 2nd use.......

In the donga for a fortnight you really need a Generator that wont let you down...mine survived 100Km winds/rain out of Laverton W.A....lost its little tent cover it always has...Van awning wasn't so lucky..ripped off....Hoo Roo
