I don't want to demean Fedor's efforts because he has achieved an incredible feat but, if sailing around the world for a record, you are, I believe, required to cross the equator. This increases your distance to the equatorial distance around the world or greater. You cannot just sit in the roaring 40's.
By not crossing the equator you could, theoretically at least, take off at one of the poles and only travel mere metres to go 'around the world'. The higher your latitude, North or South, the shorter distance you have to travel!
