Carrying Jerry cans

Hi all,

Yes its been on the agenda before. Does anyone know when and where one can place a jerry can.

I am at the top end with 250lt tanks maximum legal in all mainland states. We travel to remote areas most of the time. I have a spare Jerry can holder that I have mounted on the rear bumper bar sitting 250mm back in from the spare tyre. In other words the spare tyre protrudes 250mm beyond the same can holder.

Q. Can one still carry Diesel, Not petrol, on the rear. Or do I make up a sign saying water only.confuseconfuseconfuse

I saw a brand new 200 landcruiser today, with dual ARB Jerry Cans holders with two cans mounted on the rear, Plus all the extra fruit loaded on it with ARB, ARB stickers from the front to the rear.confuseconfuseconfuse

What's truly legal please.

Regards Jim

Don't know the law but I carry 2 jerry cans of diesel (when needed) on the roof rack. Out of the way and I feel it is safe.

If you have 250lt of fuel you won't go to too many places that you will need to carry extra fuel. My tank on a 4x4 is only 80lts and I have been to the Cape, SA desert and towing a van all over Oz.

Good luck

Why don't you just ask the Police.  Why would you want to take a public risk by putting 'water' on the jerry cans??

Sometimes i wonder if this forum is PLAY SCHOOL!!

Hi Jim. My van came with two jerry can holders built onto the towbar.

I have them both with red cans holding diesel. I used red ones as I had a pile of them from previously owned a boat (petrol).

I checked with W.A Police traffic enforcement and they don't have issues with colours - they see it as a marketing tool by the makers just to sell more for the various liquids commonly put in them and they didn't have issues with diesel jerry cans being on the rear. They would have concerns if they held petrol though.

I have travelled though SA, VIC and NSW, as well as WA with them on the back and had highway patrols behind me and never been stopped

I read the QUESTION  then he asks Or do I make up a sign saying water only. which to me suggests that he would use the sign as a reminder to carry only water

if you disagree with my reading STIFF

When I checked with Qld Transport a while back, Diesel only is allowed on the back of RV`s,[ no petrol or gas]. The containers shall not be outside the  bumper bar.

If swallowing diesel or even the mouthful of petrol was poisonous? I would be dead long ago . Easy up guys .. Sheesh !! I wouldn't suggest wrong labelling though . I would think more about load balance . The lower the better .

I too should apologise for my remarks. Should better pick when and when not to write on a forum. For me it was the day I was notified of an immediate hospital stay, of which I am just now out.

Cheers, John

John, I hope everything turned out well.

There is no need to apologise. Your remarks were on the money in my opinion.

Thanks Bryan. Problems not going to go away, but I am a tough nut to crack and just keep on keeping on. :)

Best thing, is at last there is some sunshine here in Adelaide at last. Great to see after all the rain and storms of late.

Cheers, John.
