how far north of Broken Hill do I have to go not to be freezing? Heading to wilcannia n up from there. Have not been this far south in the winter for a few years now.
Hate to be the one to say but a LOT further north than you are. We are just packing up to head north from Brisbane. It's 5 degrees at the moment. Too cold for me. Normally this time of year we go Townsville Cairns that sort of area but it all depends on how you feel the cold i guess. Dave
Inland from Rocky, (Rockhampton QLD, not Rockylizard) It will still be cold at night Evie n Rhys. You will need to come across to the coast and as Dave said, Townsville and higher for the warmer climate. I'm in Townsville for winter and getting high 20's during the day and high teens to low 20's at night and it's the end of June. Not bad at all.
Kep Safe on the roads.

Anywhere west of the Great Divide generally is deemed to be a hell of a lot colder during the winter months.
So if travelling north from B.H. in the outback one can expect cold weather.
In some places it will get down to Zero or just above.
But.............. and here is the good part.
During the winter sunny days the weather is pretty bloody good.
And here is another tip that should confirm why it is great to be in Gods Country during the winter months. OH!!!! Gods Country is from Townsville north.
The people of FNQ .will tell you that the only place you will find WINTER is in the dictionary.
Enjoy your travels.

Last winter we were up around Emerald and it was very pleasant night and day. It got down to 10 or 11 each night then up to 30 on somedays. Had one cold night down to 9. We are in Parkes NSW and so far we have had -2 to 9 being the coldest and winter is only starting. Would love to be back up around Emerald or further north right now.
It starts in Melbourne, sitting in front of a wood fire in your favorite armchair, feet up, reading a good book with a coffee at hand. We love Winter down here, who needs the hassle of finding a spot to camp in overcrowded QLD?

Victorians should take notice of the slogan on number plates " Victoria the Place to Be".
Victorians go to north Queensland each winter with $2 in their pocket, then go home with their $2 plus a doggie bag.

You are so right DD. Not too many free camps around AND CP'S are so expensive. Nothing to have a $5 a night increase on regular tariffs. Its the high season!!!! Everywhere is booked out. Rang the Daintree Village CP this morning to book in for a few days.
They normally charge $15 person pn powered. Just For myself that's a pretty good deal. However, they are now charging $30 per site which is double(for me). Too crowded in QLD ATM.
I'm not sure what is best weatherwise either. Hot and Sticky 24/7 or cold 24/7. ATM I could do with a cool breeze. Emerald is good. Warm days and cooler nights.
Yeppoon.
Next week.
19 to 23 daytime and 11 to 14 min at night.
This is our "deepest" winter week of around the 7weeks of winter.
We always went up North to Top End and Darwin Wyndham areas for three months or so.
Last 7 yrs or so we been going overseas.
Maybe start going up top for a while again.
Warm climes start at Gladdie.
But air pollution from industry not nice nowadays.
We are about the lowest you want to be. If a Southerner.
Our 7 van parks are normally chockers with Vict/NSW vans over winter. ALL winter.
But he's started opening up the showgrounds this yr when they full.
ME. Townsville is my lowest in the winter.
You like fishing.
Seaforth 100cliks North of Mackay is a very nice spot to wet a line.
Basically anywhere NORTH of Tropic of Capricorn will do you fine.
Further North, Stickier it gets.
Have you left yet????.
Don't forget to bring the wallet to help maintain our roads from all these Southern tyres hey.

We did many trips covering most of QLD back in the 70's & 80's when things were quiet, cheap & not like they are now. If you wanted to camp in a National Park for as long as you liked all that was required was to obtain a free permit from a Ranger. We bush walked many hundreds of kms through most of them. Best thing we ever did, couldn't stand the bun fight that occurs these days.

Just remember that the further from the coast you get the larger the temperature variations you get. If you have good bedding and good van heating you can live comfortably in your van but during the day you will better temperatures (higher) than on the coast..
