Toyota Coaster Equipment

Hello our names are Wendy and Jeff and we have just joined the group, we have just purchased a 1996 Toyota Coaster bus that is 80% finished so just a few more little items to go, I am hoping that some of you may be able to give me some advice or info on where to go to buy some of the items i need. I am looking for a company that actually makes long range diesel tanks that bolt straight in to replace the original or a Aux tank that will fit up under the chassis of the Coaster without any modification. The other item i want to be able fit to the Coaster is a Fresh water tank so looking for a company that makes ready to fit water tanks that i can just fit straight up under the chassis.

The last bit off advice i am chasing is regarding the Diff ratio currently it has a standard 5.625 (i think), i have heard that people are/have put a lower ratio 4.825 (I think) if these are not exact they are close to what i have been told. has anyone made the change and did it work with lowering the RPM and improve fuel usage?

If anyone can give me any info or some suggestions that would be much appreciated.

Really enjoying the freedom that the Coaster gives us and now that we have one we have noticed that there are a hell of a lot out there on the road.

Cheers

Jeff

Out Of Town Barnsley (near Newcastle) make aux fuel tanks for mostly the 4x4 and recreational vehicle market under the Long Ranger banner.

Your Toyota Coaster being 1996 may be an issue finding one to bolt directly into your model, however they do custom work as well..

The long side would be searching a company with off the shelf tank for year and model.

The short side would be having your local Sheetmetal shop measure & make to fit who also can take care of fresh water tanks as well.

Cheers

Wendy and Jeff

I have converted a 95 Coaster and my suggestions are as follows;

The Coaster will return 500 to 600 K to a tank of fuel, around 450 to 500 if towing. So I would make water more of a priority that Diesel. We carry two tanks around 110L in total with a 55 litre waste water ( Grey ) tank. The toilet cassette if you have one will give around four days. Tanks are available from Atlas or Hugo who operates as Coaster Conversions I think. If you want specific info there is a FB page, just search Toyota Coaster. The tanks don't just bolt in but are a simple fit, add a basic filter and pump and away you go.

The diff ratio is a bit of a furphy, every Coaster owner in Oz has searched but none seem to have found one. Let me know if you do. My Coaster runs just under 3000rpm at 100k so is in my mind acceptable. Some have changed the rims to a larger diameter to get the same result, but the jury is still out as to whether it is worth the $$$.

Hope this helps

Rob

An ex friend of mine has a coaster. He made enquiries to a coaster guy at Gisborne Vic about diff ratios He was told there were 3 ratios available. He has a long coaster (disabled door model 2001) and slows up on hills now so a taller diff would be worse.

well and good to cut your revs back but rest assured that if you take the engine out of the optimum rev range your fuel effency will suffer. You don't think Toyota spent millions of dollars on R&D to set their drive train at a rev range that wasn't suited to engine revs

Hi All,

Very much appreciate all the feedback and advice, yep i think i might just leave the diff thing alone and concentrate on the water and fuel tanks.

Cheers

Blaze .. Some have ratios for city driving . Not open road driving .. Check what ratios the Cruiser has ? You may find it has similar housing . Higher ratio aspect tyres would do it also .. Better on outback rippled roads . Depends on gearbox also ?

There is a Toyota Coaster group on Facebook that seems to share a lot of expertise about these vehicles.
