Big End delays another trip

Oh well, seems our trip north again this year is plagued with issues. After leaving home a month late the starter motor died at Wooroolin, after getting that fixed we progressed on to Di's brothers place outside of Gin Gin where we spent a month fixing a heap of things on the motor home. We left again heading north on the Burnett Highway and got as far as Lawgi Hall (south of Biloela) when the motor dropped a Big End. So, it was 270 K's back to Kieth's on a tilt tray and can highly recommend Brad from B & K Tilt Tray service in Biloela. Now just trying to source a recond 302 windsor to get us back on the road.

We figure we'll be here for at least 3 weeks.  Will we ever get north this year out of the cold??? or is carma trying to tell us something???.

Gee that's a bundle of bad luck.

What sort of Motorhome vehicle & how many KMs?  Any clues yet as to what caused the big end to fail?

I hope you are at the end of your troubles & back on the road soon.

Edit .. Googled Windsor 302 & found this ... I suppose that this answers my dumb question.  I suspect that you have already seen the link though.

Lucky to have somewhere to stay while MH is being fixed.

Its a 1998 Ford Transit, was a 4cyl deisel but it had a transplant by the previous owner.  Now has a 302 Windsor V8 petrol with a C4 transmission and 9 Inch ford Diff. Yes having a brother in-law who's a mechanic and a full workshop is very handy. So at the moment the motorhome is in the shed and when the doors are closed it's pitch black so we tend to sleep in a few hours not knowing the sun has risen already

Things always happen in threes, they do to us anyway. You should be right from now on, happy travels.

If you getting one built.
Get it with Hardened valves.
That model goes real well on gas.

Yep it's not too bad, but bet ecconomy was between 80 to 90 K's.  Will be interesting to see how the new motor goes.

That's on the cards to allow a future upgrade, but fitting a gas tank is an issue for both the extra weight and space.

Those heads would be worth swapping out mate.
Much better.
Swap those Edelbrocks for Holleys too.
Then spread your wings.

and you can share a coupla gas tanks around underneath.

Remove some of the crap (we ALL carry too much)
and make room for extra miles.

My first tankful of gas cost me 7 or 8c per ltr.

We're close to getting back on the road, got our motor back from the engine reconditioners yesterday and apart from the block, heads, crank (which all have been machined) & rods everything else is new. Added to that we're putting on all new hoses, plugs & leeds, engine mounts, belt, pulley bearings etc... to make it as close to a new motor as possible. Hopefully, a few more days and we'll be ready to hit the road again, by the this rain we're currently having might have cleared up.

Steve.

Well I miscalculated getting back on the road cause we found some more things to repair after running in the motor with some short trips into Bundaberg and Hervey Bay. Decided to replace the front struts but that led to replacing the coils springs and the ball joints. Then halfway through dismantling we discovered the wishbone rubber bushes needed doing as well but getting the bushes was an issue, seemed not one had stock and was going to take a couple of weeks to get some in.  Then just by chance I tried Pedders in Maryborough, who put me onto Mick at Ford Transit Parts (www.fordtransitparts.com.au  0420 927 633) which is based in Hervey Bay. I was pleasantly surprized that not only did he have stock but they were a quarter of the price quoted by Ford & Repco.

Stone the crows, you have had a bad run, makes my blown diesel injector pump tame.
When you have finished it should be ace for a few years.
Good luck safe traveling.
All the best Ge.
