I have just seen part of an address to the national press club by Barnaby Joyce in which he said while leading up to a point he was making about having the last 1,000km of dirt road from middle of WA to Winton sealed, "in the past two hundred years we only have two sealed roads across Australia"
I have never traveled across Australia by road yet but I'm confident that the road from Adelaide to Perth is sealed, but I wonder what the other road is that Barnaby was refering to ?
I wonder if the point he was trying to make is you need to go south before you go west or north before you go east, hundreds of k's out of your way to move freight about.
There is lots of sealed roads out there but have a street to hold them together.
Pretty hard to find ANY unsealed highway in Australia now except the likes of Connie Sue, Gunbarrel, Tanamai etc.
Highway 1 between Borroloola & Doomadgee?
Plenty Hwy - Sandover Hwy - Major roads such as the Strez, the Birdsville track, the Oodnadatta track, Mereenie Loop, Kulgera to Finke...................... Lots & lots of 'em lol!
