I do not know what you plan to do but to my thinking 3 weeks is far too short. Stay longer if you have the time. If you do not have time to stay longer go anyway and I am sure you will return
Bas & Eve, in short, not long enough, however, if that is all you can spare, don't try to do everything. You will end up doing a lot of driving, and seeing little.
Instead, concentrate your time in one particular area, and do it properly. There is so much to see on this little island, don't be fooled by its size. We originally booked for six months, changed our booking for 8 months after two!
If you are taking a caravan over, it is an expensive, part of the journey, make the investment worth your while.
Other advice : make sure you book your return before leaving the mainland(i can't stress this enough) and take your winter woolies regardless of the season.

Explore the big island first. We enjoyed our 3 week trip to Tasmania but wouldn't be in any hurry to go back there. We did all the iconic things like Cradle Mountain, Bay Of Fires, Tasman Peninsula, Freycinet Peninsula, Mt Wellington, Tarkine Wilderness, Gordon River Cruise & pretty much everything else. As with QLD in Winter, Tasmania is becoming increasingly crowded in Summer. We saw quite a few locals looking perplexed at the sight of mainland RVer's clustered around their local toilet block. Boarding the ferry in both directions is a ''bun fight'' as well as being very expensive. Don't make the mistake of doing a day sailing, you lose a day of your trip to total boredom, we ended up playing ''Disco Bingo''. The southern coast of Victoria was originally connected with Tasmania. If you go to places like Wilson's Promontory & the Otway Ranges they're exactly the same as Tasmania as far as many flora & fauna species are concerned. The scenery is pretty much the same as well.

Our land abounds in Nature's gifts, of beauty rich & rare. We'll be out there enjoying it somewhere, camped by ourselves much of the time.
Suggest taking as much time there as you can. We spent 6 months there - and it wasn't our first trip, either - and still did not get to do everything we had planned. We did a lot of walking (day trips) which gobble up time. Tasmania is a walker's paradise! There is a great variety of scenery across different parts of the island so it pays to dawdle. Also heaps of fascinating local history.
We went over thinking that we would knock it over in 4 weeks. So had to go back the next year for another 4 weeks as we could not see it all. Now we are trying to work outwhen we can go back for a 6 week stint. There is so much to see. Every corner or turn in the road is an...oh wow look at that ....moment. December you will have the berries and dont forget to stop at every oyster farm and scallops and scallop pies. , salmon, lobster and some great apples, stone fruit and wines, and the fresh produce at the Salamanka Markets. Have a great trip.
What is too long / not long enough? It depends on the people. We are half way through our round oz trip. From Vic we are now in Carnarvon. And we have only been gone 6 weeks. We have a dog so don't enter Nat parks.
People say constantly, "stay longer, see the sights" but we only want to see certain things, our interests are specific.
Having said this my family are from Tassy originally. So when we toured there many years ago we avoided south of Hobart and the midlands. We did what we wanted to do in 7 weeks.
Things not to miss included the tree carvings at Legerwood, murals in Sheffield, the nut at Stanley, Strachan Franklin river cruise(buy the book "the land that God forgot" about the mutiny of the last ship to leave the penal colony at Sarah island...great read), cradle mountain and Catarach Gorge Launceston. Port Arthur is interesting like all Tassy's penal history.
So it depends on your interests how long it should take you. I'd guess 7 weeks is the shortest and 4 months the max. Enjoy

I've been there twice for a total of 9 months and 2 weeks and still didn't see every thing on the island
the post before me does say it all though I like to spend more time in one place and get around to as many sites as that place offers
just one I'll mention is and under ground cell system it's in a place called Salt Water River at Port Arthur also it's a part of the Port Arthur history
they use to hold the convicts under ground in under ground cells
to keep them in the dark so they could work in the coal mine without light I'll let you discover the rest of the story
cheers Harry
Depends if you are going to Tassie to enjoy the places and food or to just drive past everything. You could drive a lap in 3 weeks but suggest you use a movie camera so you don't have to stop. We have ben twice, 3 months and 4 months. Still more to do and see, but then time is not important to us. Fortunatly some people have to work otherwise how could we travel.
Neil
We did Tassie in 3 1/2 weeks a few years back, but we flew down and hired a car and stayed in cabins, cheap motels etc. Did the touristy places - Hobart, Mt. Wellington,Port Arthur, Richmond, Bruny Island and Cruise, Devil's Kitchen, Tahuna Air Walk,Russell Falls, Wall of Wilderness, Nelson Falls, Wilderness Railway, Walked around Dove Lake, Burnie Penguins, Sheffield, Tasmazia, Stanley (The Nut), The Ransley Veteran Car Collection at Wynyard, Launceston, Beacons Field and Sea Horse Place and the Platapus House Ledgerwood, Ross, Oaklands to name a few. Stopped at lookouts, lighthouses etc. We went in February and it was only getting dark around 9pm. I remember it was 6pm when we went up Mt. Wellington. A lot of attractions were 9 - 5 but scenery, walks can be done later. We had very good weather so was not laid up with bad weather at all. We didn't book ahead. We're not into wineries, caves or coffee shops, so it will depend what your likes are and budget. We didn't have our little motorhome then so next time we go we would probably do things differently.
