There is no accommodation at the show/sport ground Rocket. There is a fotty ground just on the south side of the town but I took a peak and was also told it's not a place to prop. There is also NO free camping anywhere near the town and they are very very strict and you will come away poorer.
I stayed at a place north side of the town but in no way would I recommend to anyone and would never stay there again on weekends or any sort of holiday. If you have Wiki, read all the comments on the variuos listings and one is vary accuate and doesn't get a good report. Of course it all depends on what you want.
It is a very busy place on weekends and you pay for parking in most places.

I stayed in Ballina and went for a day visit to Byron Bay, that lasted for only 2 hours as you can't park anywhere in the town or near the shopping centre without having to 'pay', we wanted some lunch and couldn't free park so drove to North Byron and the 'Sun Hotel' and had a beautiful feed. We then drove back through ByRon Bay and couldn't find a free parking spot even on the verge of town, the parking 'pay meter' was even in front of private homes and units.
it is obvious that Byron Bay is so far up itself that it can see stars, they don't like tourists or visitors or their own residents it seems, so we decided there and then that we didn't like them either, so we buzzed off never to visit again!

If you want to stay a couple of nights and experience Byron Bay I would recommend "Glen Villa Resort & CV Park", Butler Street Byron. It's by far the best park in Byron with large grassy sites, shade or sunny, permanents are upper class and very friendly. The Park has very strict rules to ensure everyone enjoys their stay, ie. no groups, no parties, singles and couples only. No pets.
The Byron markets, not to be missed, are held just down the road, Butler Street, 3 minute walk from the park. It's a 3 / 4 minute walk into the heart of Byron past one of the best hotels in Byron, the Railway Hotel (the Rails), great food and live music.
Its not the cheapest park in town, around $30 per night, but once there you don't need to drive anywhere just walk saving heaps on parking fees. Byron Shires income from parking fines are higher that the entire Randwick City Council!!
When I was there a few weeks ago, You can camp for free, with other backpackers, right in Town at the old railway station, directly behind the info. ctr. and next to the station pub.
Dunny's close by in the park, could be dirty. No idea where u shower. I checked with the Police, because I arrived very late, they actually told me to go there, it's not an offense to sleep in your car.
The palm reader is pretty good if u like that stuff. Personally I love the place, I could live there. Make sure you go to Waetogo beach, the name says it all lol.
What a waste of time and money that place is ,caravan on the west side of town ,can't remember the name but wanted $37.50 per person for powered site ,you can imagine where we told them to stick it.
Last year we stayed at the rugby/footy ground, south of town, good showers & loo, left the van there while away in town.... (took a deep breath and crossed my fingers) all good, a few back packing tenters and a couple of other vans.... price was quite sheap, much better than a caravan park for some where to sleep.
We drove into town early last year (as residents of eastern Aust, who had visited Byron on numerous occasions previously, and Mr D had been a resident in a previous life)
All we wanted to do was go up to the lighthouse (previously visited...... etc) to add to our map on the back of the van. No where to park at the visitors info area (only suitable for small hire vehicles etc) all paid parking throughout town. Asked at a caravan park if we could park the van there (happy to pay) for a while, while we went up to the lighthouse.
Yup, sure, $25.00 please. Needless to say, we continued out of town and stayed at Lake Ainsworth, who got our $$$s instead.
