I have spoken with Victorian Ambulance as our base will be there as selling house in Qld and need to take out amluancambulance cover as not in a health fund
I was informed that if we are traveling in Central Australia and need the Royal Flying Doctor the Ambulance subscription doEs not cover this.
I have contacted Royal Flying Doctor and they said that this was true, only covers if in QLD.
I am doing more research but I was wondering if any one else new this.
Need to be covered.
Look forward to replies.
Sue

No, I was not aware of this. I too will look into it. Someone else recently advised that if you have SA Ambulance cover then you are not covered outside of SA. It's becoming a mine field. I have always believed that we should abolish the state system and have the one governing body and make ALL road laws, Education, Licences, Ambulance Cover etc the same. It's a no brainer I reckon.

The South Australian policy change has been deferred now for 12 months due to public backlash.

If you require ambulance as a result of a motor vehicle accident and you are driving or a passenger in a Victorian registered motor vehicle you are covered anywhere in Australia for all medical costs including ambulance and patient transport (eg RFDS) under the Victorian TAC scheme, NOT under your ambulance membership.
If you are the holder of a Federal Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card, (and a few other cards, eg Veteran Affairs), you are covered Australia wide under what is known as the 'State Concession Scheme' for all patient transport which includes RFDS and you do NOT require separate Ambulance membership
Ambulance Victoria membership covers for
All emergency road ambulance transport
All MICA (Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance) attendance and treatment
All emergency air ambulance and clinically necessary non-emergency air ambulance
All ambulance treatment when transport is not required
The same level of cover for ambulance treatment and transport services provided interstate as are covered back in Victoria*
All clinically necessary non-emergency patient transport.
To become an Ambulance Victoria member you must be an Australian citizen or have been granted permanent or temporary resident status. You must also reside within their Operational Boundaries.
Thanks Hylife, I have spent most of this afternoon trying to sort this out. Quite a minefield.
We still have qld registered car and van. I have a pension card with NSW address which is my sons place
May need to sort all this out.
Appreciate you input
Thanks Sue
Get use of a Victorian address and then you can re-register your car in Victoria. Not only is your Vic rego cheaper because it "includes" the CTP ($710 for cars and $40 for caravans) and never have to worry about pointless roadworthy inspections and tests, but you can cancel and claim back the unused portion of your Qld rego and CTP.
A pension or seniors card alone does not provide you with free national ambo coverage, only concession or health care cards etc.

Glad to be in NSW, covered Australia wide state ambulance services.
- ACT Ambulance Service
- Ambulance Service of NSW
- Ambulance Victoria
- Queensland Ambulance Service
- South Australia Ambulance Service
- St John Ambulance Service NT
- St John Ambulance Service WA
- Tasmanian Ambulance Service.
You need to check what is paid for and not paid for the State you live in.
In WA, the Ambulance Service has this to say about pensioners and centrelink concession cards (copied from their website):
"Q: What are the discount arrangements for Pensioners? A: WA Residents aged over 65 WA Full Aged Pensioners are entitled to free ambulance transport, where it is deemed medically necessary (exception being a transfer between hospitals where one or both is private hospital). WA residents who are aged 65 and over, but do not receive a Pension from Centrelink, are not entitled to free ambulance transport. They will receive a 50% discount on their ambulance account. For further information and Frequently Asked Questions, please go to the Department of Health Website: http:// www.ambulancepolicy.health.wa.gov.au/intro/ A: Other Pensioners aged under 65 Pensioners receiving a Disability, Single Parent or Carers pension or other Centrelink pension may be entitled to a 50% discount on their ambulance account. Health Care Card holders are not entitled to any discount or concession. All pensions are confirmed with centrelink to be current at the date of service for the discount to apply. A copy of the pension card is required for dependants"
The Flying Doctors service is a charity organization and do not charge for their service. They do ask for a donation though

The amazing things you see when nomading Australia
"What happens if an aged pensioner or senior is interstate and needs an ambulance?
They will receive free or discounted transport in exactly the same way. Aged pensioners will be transported free of charge and seniors will receive the 50 per cent subsidy.
In this instance you are likely to be issued a bill from the interstate ambulance provider. If this is the case you need to contact St John Ambulance on 08 9334 1212 and advise them of the bill and your aged pension card details (for aged pensioners) and or another form of identification (for seniors) and they will pay or part pay the bill on your behalf to the interstate ambulance provider."

Just be mindful that many ambulance covers with health insurance only include emergency and if it is not deemed an emergency then you have to foot the bill. Have an accident or collapse in the street and a good Samaritan calls an ambulance and then your predicament is not called an emergency you pay. Once we realised this we took out ambulance cover with SA Ambulance and have had it for years; will keep it too.
Current SA Ambulance info,
The cost of an emergency ambulance is generally around $600 - $900. If you are covered with SA Ambulance Service, you wont have to pay a cent if:
the service is provided by SAAS, or the ambulance transport originates in another State or Territory and is provided by a recognised Interstate ambulance service, or
for a transport service originating in South Australia, if:
SAAS directs or requests another person to provide non-emergency ambulance services, or after a request by the subscriber, SAAS, at its sole discretion, agrees in writing prior to the transport date that another person may provide the service, and that person is recognised under Part 6 of the Health Care Act 2008 (SA).
my sentiments exactly this is one country and all laws should be across the board ban state borders and have every one on the one page would save a **** load of money and make life a dam side more easy and comfortable for all
