RACWA have a policy to cover heavier vehicles. Costs a bit more, but has many other benifits as well. Neil
Hello woolman
They may have recently changed/reconsidered their policy
Around June 2014, RACWA Bunbury office, would not insure my (new to me), 2006 Fiat Ducato Jayco motorhome.
I had been with RAC all my life, and the only claim was when I was a teenager around 1966/7
Weight did not come into it, the girl showed me a picture of a motorhome on her computer screen, when I said that mine was similar, she told me that they did not cover them.
When I explained my good driving record, she advised me to see upper management.
It will be interesting if others in WA have a motorhome covered by RAC, as my renewal will be due in the near future
I will admit that I was perhaps just too lazy to contact RAC upper management, to find out why they did not cover motorhomes, I did not wish to offend anyone, by pushing my money onto them
SGIO Bunbury office, (WA, State Government Insurance Office, for those from other states), insured me over the counter, and I had never been with them before.
I'm with Ken Tame - have been for 12 yrs now. My MH is 4,5 tonnes GVM, and annual premium is around $1100 for a $75,000 MH
You need to be a CMCA member as well - it's part of the deal. If you're not a CMCA member, it's about $45pa
KT will & does look after 'his' clients
We lost a $1200 solar panel in the first year - replaced at no cost & no arguement
Around 250,000km we had fuel pump failure, some 450km from the nearest Ford dealer. KT got a flat bed truck to us within 5 hours and took us across outback QLD to the dealer. Little or no cost to us [can't recall, it was years ago]
Burst a radiator hose [the one at the very rear of the engine block] at 10pm one night on the Hume Hwy south of Sydney. 1Hr later the truck was there to run us back to Goulburn to be dropped outside the Ford dealer at midnight. KT picked up that one as well
Hi Tony. I have been insured with SGIO for about 16 years now and never had a problem with them, BUT I don't have my caravan with them.
If you compare what they will pay up for and all the exclusions, they are like most general insurers and offer a poor RV product.
I still use SGIO for all my insurance, but my 'van is insured with CIL.
I suggest you have a careful read of the PDF booklet that came with your SGIO motorhome insurance (or phone them for another one if you've lost it). They have very well explained and easy to understand policy details for each of their products. You may be surprised at the limits on how much you can claim on many items in your m/home, as well as the exclusions - the things you are not insured for

Bruce and others, it's road service that the OP is concerned with. The CMCA insurance policy through Ken Tame is the only road service cover that I know of for those in states where their motoring organisation does not cover large vehicles.

Hello Bruce and Bev
Thanks for that info, it is appreciated
I shall certainly look around before my renewal is due
I have just rang RACQ and was advised that in the event of a breakdown with the cruiser, that they will place our cruiser on the back of a tray truck and hook up the caravan to the tow truck and take the package to the destination for repairs.
Now if the package can not be repairs they will arrange for the van and cruiser to be delivered to our home base.
Caravan under 7 metres are covered. That good news as our van is 6.3 metres. Forgot to ask if that 7 meters included the A frame.
RACQ have changed policy to nothing over 4 tonne. Anyone know who covers for heavier?? Eg 5t Thanks for all and any help
Actually, RACQ have revised it again, it's now Max 3500Kg AND Max length 6.5Mt
After being a customer for 16 years, we'll be changing our Roadside Assist cover to NRMA who cover towing up to 10 Tons.

Ineligible Caravans and Trailers
RACQ Ultimate: Caravans or Trailers that exceed 9.7
metres (32 feet) in length (including drawbar), 2.3 metres
(7.5 feet) in width or 4 tonnes GVM;
Realistically most vans would be wider than 2.3 metres, so if they police that not many vans would get assistance.
Hi folks. When we bought our motorhome, we took out roadside assistance with RACQ. The Jayco Conquest has a gvm of 4490 kg. They were happy to take our money but a year later we were advised by another motorhome owner that they would not attend our vehicle as it was deemed a truck. We drive it on a car license. When we spoke to RACQ in their Caloundra office they confirmed that they could not assist us in the event of a breakdown. They were not prepared to return the money they took for the years breakdown fees.
We joined Mercedes Roadside assistance. Have used them 3 or 4 times and they are great. Though when we blew a fuse in Springsure guess who arrived to find the fault...RACQ. Anyway, with the assistance of the manuel we sorted it. So I am pretty digusted with RACQ. They also took increasing premiums for our Prado which I later found out was reducing in value according to their books but they were happy to charge us a replacement value that they would not honour.
Currently insured with NRMA and they have been fine.
