We are going to FNQ for some farm sitting and I would appreciate some suggestions as to which route we might take and what camping stops might be worthwhile. Happy to have a go at free camping. We have had ourt van for 4 years but have not done very much due to lots of unforeseens but are now going to try to be adventurous. Thank you all for your input.

Thank you FringeDweller. Will do a Google map print out and see what it looks like. Then I guess I get on Camps 7 and see what I can find on each road.
In some ways, I wish we could slum it the way you did, but the finance minister would screech!!
Hopefully, we will get there ,this time.

We went in 2008 Sydney via Dubbo Bourke and straight up through cullamulla, Charlaville to Mt Isa. We are doing the same route this July as Lambie wants to see Winton and the digs. Then on to Mt Isa and The Butter Fly George. Across to Darwin and off into the never never. Very flat after Dubbo. We a off the hook in 20 more days.
Thank you Jim. Your route would take us a bit further east than we are thinking of going this time. But I hope you enjoy and keep safe. Any suggestions as to campsites?
Margaret

if going through Cunnamulla a visit to the tourist info center/museum is worthwhile - especially the short film about the artesian basin - can get water there too

We went Sydney to Bourke in one go as we only had 14 weeks LSL. Then onto Charliville for a week. There after My memory gives out. We did a complete circuit. This Time I will keep a Diary as there is no time to be anywhere soon, excepte Darwin, Exmouth, and drop in on Bruce & Bev in lower WA. We had the KK camper in tow. This time we have the meals on wheels, plus.
Keep safe out there, and let the dickheads pass you by. Take your time and enjoy.
You could spend all winter there. A wonderful little town that loves nomads.
Free camping in the showgrounds and right next door to a wonderful Olympic sized "heated" pool with a pebblecoated walk-in beach that allows even a zimmer frame geriatric to access and exit the pool. $2 entry to the pool with showers and toilets, a great café and café foods, lots of shade cloth to protect our aging skin with burgeoning melanomas. What more could you want?
