Melbourne to Cairns

Hi, We want to take the best most direct/fastest route from Melbourne to Cairnes. Towing a small caravan with a Mazda BT50. What are your suggestions??

G'day Bananas , I would go Newell to Dubbo then Walget , St George , Emerald , Charters Towers .

I would go up to Undara , Atherton , Mareba  then down to Cairns , seeing you have a small van ,

you should not have any trouble going down Kuranda Range . That to me would be the most direct

way . AND You get to stay Away from the Bruce Hwy. Couple of long stretches though , especially

Belyando & Undara , but reasonably good roads all the way.

I did similar but went Dubbo, Moree, Mungindi & Nindigully Pub to St.George. Nindigully is an interesting free camp.
Going via Walget to St. George, you can visit Lightning Ridge.
Just planned a trip yesterday up that area with stops at both Lightning Ridge & Nindigully.

Bananas, If I understand you want to get to cairns in a hurry,I would go Melbourne to Dubbo to Moree to Goondiwindi the Leichhardt Hwy to Rockhampton an then the Bruce Hwy to Cairns no need to go up the Tablelands and down again if your not sight seeing, steep and winding in places, great place to visit though so you should have a look while your there.

That way you go thru Banana. I went that way to Mackay many years ago as that was the quickest way to there.
