Most will remember when a truck carrying 50 tonnes of ammonium nitrate crashed and exploded.last year on the bridge over Angellala Creek just south of Charleville, anyway my son and I just got back from doing the linemarking for caravans to park on the sidetrack and have a look. There are only 4 bays marked head to tail but plenty of room to park so more vans can really fit in. Presently it's just a stop with no facilities but that may come in time. I asked some council workers about overnite camping and whether it would be allowed and whilst not official they thought there would be no problems as Charleville like most western towns need all the tourists they can get. The town also has a couple of traditional caravan parks in town plus out of town are a few 'bush camping' parks. We lived there for 10 years in the 90's and returning was a real blast.
Must see if anyone visits is Historical House which holds an amazing amount of artifacts and research material. Stop and talk to a local for some of the best yarns this side of happy hour. Characters aplenty.....
The pics below show some of the damage - the lump of metal in my hand is from a spider on the truck which we found in the fork of a tree about 200 metres from the blast site.
Visited Historical House when passing through Charleville last year and stayed at a bush camping park. Nice place. Will have to check out where your pictures were taken and the Rest Stop next time we're up that way. Cheers.
