After looking around for a 25mm commercial Sink / shower Strainer. I played around with this idea to stop the bits flowing into our grey water holding tank when used.
Using two small buttons 150mm of heavy mono fishing line. 1 x Kmart soft set of three strainers =$3.50
I cut out the nylon mesh pushed the line through the two button holes, through the mesh, through the second button. use a match / candle and melted the line back together.
This way the lot gets pushed into the sink drain fully. put the plug in and when finished pull the plug. Waste water drains out, grab the top button and all the leftovers are retained. washout ready for next use. A few photos attached.
Interesting idea. Your sink must have the normal size household hole, whereas ours is about the size of a 10 cent piece, and there is nothing to stop the buttons from dropping further into the pipes. Yes we do sometimes have issues with bits of scraps accumulating in the S trap, so was interested in your suggestion.

A diesel Nissan Pathfinder towing a Coromal Element 542.
From other GN's with and with out holding tanks they have had issues with the smell coming back up the pipes into the van because of matter getting hung up in their systems. Our van has Hypo filters fitted in line to stop the same odours. I'm also trying to avoid small food scraps / body hair etc from getting into our system from the very start. (Prevention is better then the cure.)
This unit can be pushed completely into the line by drawing the two buttons together the mono line is 130lb and stiff, to allow myself to push it down pass the inserted drain plug so it does not interfere with the plug in any way. Its very quick to put together. I must admit it's very novel,simple, but should do the trick. Yet can be drawn out with a pair of small pin nose plyers, or your fingers by pinching the melted nylon bulb and drawing it out, without getting hung up.

Does this make sence to you. Our vans away at the moment. I will try it out on its return. I have looked every where for a commercial version without luck.

Hi Glen,
No. They are all the same 25mm max. Will give them a test run and let everyone know the outcome. I would have thought China would make them. Not this size anyway.
PS: I even thought of using a sewing thinball and drilling 1-2mm holes in the bottom and ream the top edge flat to fit in the sink proper.

Thanks Jim for that answer, I guess a prawn head stuck halfway down would cause a stink. I also must admit that my wife has previously admonished me for using a knife to force big food lumps thru the plughole when I do the washing-up.

They may do the trick. Does your variety store have a name. We have squilons of them here in Sydney Hot Dollar, PK, $2 Dollar. etc. If one has them, the others are sure to follow.
Had a blockage in my kitchen sink drain some time ago.
Put a wet cloth over the sink drain hole & inserted a hose into the exit end of the drain pipe. With a cloth held around the pipe/hose to give a seal, SWMBO turned on the tap full bore.
Blew out the obstruction including a long lost teaspoon!
The wet cloth turned out to be a good idea in that it prevented the gunk from being sprayed all round the kitchen area.
Fixed the problem.
But I'll be on the lookout for those $2 shop strainers.
ps. A single onion peel caused a similar problem at home too. Put strainer plugs on the sinks there to fix it.
