We camped on the Lachlan River at Booligal last year. We got talking to an old guy who was born & bred in the town, lived all of his life there. The town has a tiny pub. He said that he enjoys going the pub occasionally but he goes home when it gets too crowded with more than 6 people.

Actually that is the problem with many of the towns throughout Australia - they are becoming deserted and becoming ghost towns - they need people actually living in them to survive. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I'm pretty sure cotton has a lot to do with it. We were down in Griffith NSW earlier this month the home of SunLong but all the rice is now removed and cotton is going in by the thousands of acres.

And where does the water come from for all this cotton? And the mess on the side of roads when they are transporting it, in huge bales, if any other commercial operator made that much mess, they would be in trouble.

That is sad.  Did you know the rice is sent overseas to be packed and then comes back?  ..maybe..   This interests me because my family were rice farmers in the area.  They had the rice sheds near Jerilderie named after them. Cotton growing in the area was in the experimental stage when I was about 15.  No doubt the Murrumbidgee river will become polluted.

Brother had a property out at Booligal.  Saw the effect it had on the Lachlan.  Dead fish everywhere. Particularly when they flush it into the waterways.

Cotton growing is so bad for the environment and uses up huge amounts of water. Rice? it uses a lot of water too.

Better to stick to the traditional dry area wheat farming.  Mind you, Griffith only grew because of the fruit and wine growing and irrigation.

There's not much cotton grown in Menzies. In fact, there's not much of anything grown in Menzies.
