Preparing for our trip to WA

We are in the planning stage for our two year trip to WA. Have been gathering what info we can of the places to go and stay away from. We will be leaving Vic about June/July just depends upon a couple of things coming together. We will have two small dogs with us and therefore that will put national parks out of reach but there are ways of getting around. Our home is a 22ft Roadstar pulled by a 100 series Crusier  4.2 ltrs Turbo charged. Having given you the broad stuff we would love for anyone who has the time and energy to let us know of the places that a worth a visit, short or long.

Got a lot of info from Camps and Wiki camps But would love to hear from anyone with places you have been to that was really was one of the best. Be they CP, free camps, bush camps anywhere that you think is a good one to stay at. If you would rather PM that is ok with us as well.

Please include whatever details you think are needed we will put them into our planning list. We have a lot of details already from other people's posts,  so in a way you will help others like us who are in the planning stage.

If you don't mind visitors popping let us know as we would love to catch up with you as well.

Thanking you in advance for your input into our journey

Brian and Cheryl.

Shut the front gate!

Finally you are about to continue on your big journey, how exciting. I can feel the excitement from many moons away. I'm sure Cheryl will miss her weekly outings though and you, Brian, your commitments as well. I'm sure the girls know something is about to happen too.

Travel safe my friends and take it easy over there in the ' Wild West ' smile

If you like warm weather but departing Melbourne in June you will need to head north quickly. Perth and the southwest can be cold and wet during winter if we are luckly. A lot of WA grey nomads travel north for the winter so it will be busy up there then. If you can find other travellers with dogs you might be able to take it in turns to dog mind especially at Karjini and the Bungle Bungle two places to try see. There are plenty of place and CPs over here that are dog friendly now. The Gateway CP 20kms out of Broome is a good place to stay in the area with dogs if you cant get into the dog friendly overflows in Broome. The coast road from Broome south with Barn Hill, Pardoo Station along 80 mile beach. Marble Bar is an interesting place if you dont mind a few kms off route 1. Then 40 Mile just south of Karratha, Barradale for an overnight, Bulara Station up in the Exmouth area although Exmouth is not a good place with dogs especially as the interesting areas are national park. Some good farm stays and freedom camps @ about $12 per night along the remote coast in the sand dunes and beaches north of Carnarvan. Travelling south of Grealdton following the wild flower season as it moves south. Perth and south west not before October. You could spend at least 4 months down that way in summer early autumn? Margaret River, Big Valley farm is a good dog friendly place, Fontys Pool at Manjinup and Happy Days CP Albany are Dog friendly but book in advance. Even Kalgoorlie is a very interesting place with good gold fields museums and great pubs.
But what every you do you must take the turnoffs dont as many do just drive around route1 and miss everything. Its a bloody big place with lots of Kms between places so take your time. And O yes you will get drinking water and dump points all over. Shark bay area will take a few days but must book and probably to most unfriendly part of WA.
If I were to do WA starting in June from Melbourne I would probably head straight up through Alice to the north west and warm sunny days and miss out the cold drive along the south coast.
Have a great trip.

Couldn't have said any better than Moonraker especially advising to head North first and make your way down coastal and inland .
We live in Albany and by June the cold sets in till mid October .
Enjoy the ride

Be sure to visit the Wheatbelt. There are some brilliant rocks e.g. Beerinbooding, Elachbutting, Baladjie and billycatting to name a few. Nice little park at Muckinbudin to explore them from or you can camp at some of the rocks. Elachbutting has camping and in my opinion, and many others, is more impressive than wave rock without the crowds or cost. Google them and have a look.

Gday

Its a great trip if you take some time to smell the roses. We traveled around 300KMs a day and got to see some fantastic scenery. A few....

Esperance, The great Australian Bight has numerous free camps (wiki) with little or no facilities but the scenery is to die for.

We came inland after Esperance and went via the South Coast Highway and Albany Highway, great trip.

Dont overload the tug as it costs at the bowser, we took 55 liters of spare water, never had to use it. I have to say the facilities on the WA side are much better than the SA side, nicer rest stops and lots of free camps with dump points.

Enjoy your trip, be safe

enjoy its a great  trip and when at the border if you need fuel go to the servo at the caravan park as it was 8 cents a litre cheaper than at the roadhouse at the border, also try to stay at fraser range station for the nite and eat at the dining room what a great meal, although things were changing with mining in the area and they are going to camp at the station .but water and power available, also .mike g g

Hey guys hit the Margaret River region and surrounding locations like Dunsborough and Busselton etc. Park in the area for a week or more, and you won't be disappointed. Wineries, rugged coast line, Chocolate Factory, Cheese Factory the list goes on..

enjoy the trip west, we are a friendly lot and will help you with what ever you require...

We left our dogs at the council pound at Tom price  you have to book well ahead and did a great day tour of Karijini also at the time the only CP was dog unfriendly so we camped at the old airstrip out of town
