BIG Hills

Drove up Willunga Hill south of Adelaide, towing the van recently. That is one long steep hill.

Was wondering how others fared.

What speed did it slow you down to?

Cheers, John.

Hills have never worried me . I did my "apprentiship" in 169 Cummins & 189LXB Gardiners in Fodens & Inters.

Along with B model Macks , when the roads were still , hilly & windy.

Now , I have a turbo diesel 4X4 , & I still like hills.

Going down em I GO Back gears , at th top of th hill.

Going up em , I go back as necessary.

Ooops that should be 160 Cummins & 180 LXB Gardiners.

And yes I am 20% deaf from noisy trucks & Naval guns.

They are winding & steep with lots of sharp bends.   I havn't been on the Willunga road for about 25ys and certainly not towing.  However, I rate Macquarie Pass, Clyde and Brown the most  difficult  mountains to negotiate in Aust.

G'Day John,

Haven't done Willunga Hill, but have towed out thru Crafers a few times, (got a 19'6" Van and a3L LC Colorado), going up I'm at 58-60Kmh in 2nd gear and like to stay around 2400-2500-RPM. Did Lakes Entrance to Mt Hotham and over to Bright last year, coming out of Omeo didn't get out of 2nd for over 1/2 an hour. Going down use the same gear.

Regards,

Mike.

Went up Willunga Hill just a few days ago and took a pic near the top.
Third gear - about 6 tonns, 502,000km, 22 years old, 4 cylinders.......

Once a diesel owner, always a diesel owner :)

2 parts, deaf left and right ear.

It was a 180 Cummins but he shot 11 of the horses.

Perkins 207 is it Peter.

I drove a Boxer with 354 Perkins and they loved the revs at about 2500>. Pulled bulk fuel through Adelaide hills when home on holidays.
