Older Drivers ....

Read an article a little time back wherein "a top NSW cop" suggested that older drivers (over 70) should not be able to drive, they cause accidents, etc. etc

Had this article ex Sydney Morning Herald .... sort of sums up my thoughts...

I think your attachment is a letter to the editor and hidden internet link is in it. Opened a vgi link on my laptop and it showed link unsafe.

If I am recalling the same cop, he was interviewed live and said he was misquoted.

It should be on ability and cognizant of current road rules IMHO.

Firstly, I believe the "Letter to the Editor" was written tongue in cheek, and in fact was praising older drivers.

Secondly, it amazes me the sort of comments that we get from various sources regarding those in our community who are older, whether that level of "older" be fifty, sixty or seventy plus.

According to them, we are all responsible for the problems in todays society, from the levels of poor driving, to the state of the finances of the economy by drawing pensions, being greedy and wanting to leave something for our families by not spending all of our superannuation, to filling up hospitals causing major waiting lists (obviously for those who are younger) to just about every other ill with society. But to me the amazing part is that without fail, those making the comments, who are all so much younger than us, seem to not realise that they too will one day be a major part of all of these problems when they have reached our age.

And they can't see that the fixes that they propose, all of which make things harder for those of us already over 50, will cause them suffering as well. It is so ironic it often brings a smile to my face as they earnestly argue their point forgetting the impact it will have on them. Just my view of the continued sport of "older" bashing that seems to have become a major part of our society today

Next time you're in a caravan park check out all the elderly people that can't park or reverse their vehicles & caravans. Also check out all the bent taps & power supply outlets. Does this tell you anything?

Curious what a VGI link is Baz?

Here's the graphic out of the attached document, in case you didn't get to see it.

Yes Bob I saw the word doc but it also opened a link to a vgi website on my screen.

I have had problems with vgi as they promote website and web development and it seems to host malware.

Both McAfee and now (in last week since instal) Kaspersky have blocked vgi stuff.

My system just brings up the tongue in cheek word document. Those who have something else come up should thoroughly disinfect their computer, it has serious problems.

Growing old requires all the experience, knowledge and patience that we have acquired over the past 50 (or more years).  The younger ones are always in a hurry to get to the next red traffic light whilst we just cruise up and time it so the light is green.  May all your traffic lights be green!

I agree PeterD, VGI is Volunteered Geographic Information that is used by legitimate sites such as Google Maps, and Google Earth for use volunteered data. If your computer opens a site on your web browser when you open a document, you have a problem.

Thanks Bob and PeterD. Tried again no problem today but I'll scan and download Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Cheers Baz

EDIT:  completed scans nothing found.  I have been thinking and I had Yahoo home page open with news stories etc and this may have been how the VGI page opened.

.. am guessing that could be why there are "drive throughs" ..... I also note the myriad on new tugs and new vans on the road these days .. my observations suggest a lot if "clean skins"

I have found that, after sometime not doing it often, reversing a van is a tad different to reversing a trailer and is an art to be learned and relearned ... have almost got it right but, like most, will never master it totally.

The article I was referring to was in Caravan & Motorhome magazine posted by "Fred" .. The one I included in my list was as an answer and is most definitely "tongue in cheek"

Age-old deficiency

Its about time the authorities did something about older drivers on our roads.

For far too long older drivers have caused havoc as they hog the left lane, stick to the speed limits (even the road work limits) and stop at stop signs, causing great inconvenience and often preventing others from doing whatever they like.

Another major concern is that by avoiding fines and demerit points, they are not doing their bit for the revenue of our state, and are therefore placing a further burden on younger drivers.

Until older drivers can prove that they are proficient at weaving in and out of traffic, driving while texting, tailgating, using drugs or doing burnouts, they must be banned from holding a licence.
