We suck up to the Yanks so much that we should have the Stars & Stripes in the corner of ours. What a pathetic lot we are. Well done NZ!

Duh! The irony of having a Union Jack in the corner of the Australian and NZ flags obviously escapes some people. It looks like the Aussies and Kiwis will still be kissing British backsides for decades to come.

I agree with you  dorian,  It's a damn pity that the Kiwi's couldn't look ahead and grab the opportunity to have an identity of their own,

The only thing I can think of, is that there must be still a lot of Pommie influence in N.Z.

I also wonder if there has been another case of vote rigging in favour of the outcome !!!

"Oh Well"  all I have left to say is... "KIWI'S YA BLEW IT''

Now suffer in your Pommie Jocks !!!!

A DISGUSTED,,,, K.J.

Think is more a case of once a colonial...........!

But then even most the Greek and Italian descendants like the flag the way it is.

The Union Flag stands for more than most think anyway so perhaps they are right keeping it the top corner.

Personally I would prefer Aus to develop its own standard.

Duh! We're still a member of the Commonwealth until we become a Republic which doesn't seem like happening any time soon. Until we become a republic the Union Jack will be staying exactly where it is on the Australian flag. Obviously a large majority of the NZ population think the same way & are happy with the status quo. I wouldn't be surprised if Australia went the same way as NZ.

Leave it as is nothing to be gained by the changing of the flag If you think everyone should be recognized then maybe flying the UN flag has merit, lets face there's only a few full blooded Australians left and soon we will be all gone

I'm surprised that NZ didn't change.

I would like to get rid of the Jack from ours too.

Perhaps we could start a discussion about which flag our troops fought under.  The blue background or the red background. Or perhaps the white one.

ps.  Which USA State has the union Jack on its flag?

Speaking of which flag we fought under, I would rather see the money it would cost to change the flag spent on the health of the veterans who have fought under it.

Oh and that would be Hawaii

The Union Jack is the anachronistic symbol of a dead empire, a concept that should be repugnant to any decent human being. Why would any sovereign, self respecting nation wish to remain within a "Commonwealth" whose sole unifying feature is that all members were at one time raped and pillaged by Mother England?

If you wish to remember the history of British colonialism, then remember it in the history books, not on a national symbol. The Eureka flag is quintessentially Australian and symbolises freedom. The Union Jack symbolises subjugation.

Tony Abbott demonstrated Australia's sycophantic Menzoid servitude when he knighted Prince Phillip. I would have expected the resulting national embarrassment to have galvanised the republican movement, but apparently not. The citizens of other countries fought and died for their independence. Australians and Kiwis only need to scratch their mark on a piece of paper. Too bad.

Congratulations ....  You win the prize.  I got a surprise when I visited Hawaii & saw their State Flag for the first time.  Not the sort of thing that you would expect of part of the USA.

ps.  I'm re-reading James A Michener's Hawaii at the moment.  A great book, as most of his are.

Gooday,

I too am very surprised at the Kiwi Referendum on their proposed new flag, reckon if they had chosen the proposed Silver Fern on the black & white background it would have got up.

A good Mate of mine and I have designed a new Aussie flag which we consider covers all requirements and gives us a true ideetntity which we now do not have .

Just have a look at the great Flag the Canadians now have.

Hi,

I would have liked to say all that too. Time to stand on our own two feet and throw off the past. That is not happening just yet so having a decent flag to wave comes in next for me. biggrin

However the a*se lickers still rule here and you only have to look at the war waged by the press to see which way people can be swayed. There are lots of small countries which have chosen independence and a good flag and feel FREE of their previous rulers. Why not us too. wink

Your contribution points to a file on your hard drive. Therefore none of us can see it. The TIFF attachment is OK, albeit very small.

Gday...

An interesting design, Thomas.

Can I ask what the Black/Green/Brown background depicts?

The "silhouetted roo" against what I guess is the sun has merit but what happened to the "green and gold"?

Cheers - John

Gooday,

In answer to the question what do the colours represent?-:

Well you have Green Stripe and the Gold Sun representing our Green & Gold, National Colours.

Then you have the Black Stripe and the Gold Sun representing 2 of the colours of The Aboriginal Flag,

followed by The Red Ochre representing the Red Earth of so much of Central Australia and other parts of the country which is to represent the Red on the Aboriginal Flag.

Then of course The Kangaroo which depicts the True Australian Identity, recognised by almost everybody throughout the World,

similar to The Maple Leaf of Canada.

Trust this explains our thinking.

Cheers,

Would insert a better Image but unable to do so.

Why did Facebook consider this alternative flag design to be offensive?

Interesting to read your comments,if it wasn't for thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives fighting under this very flag you would not be sitting behind your computer typing this verbal crap.

If you can come up with a better Flag and a better system, please show it.I for one would like to see it,and I am sure lots of others would too.

Long past time for us to stand up as an independent country! A republic & a new flag ( without the Union Jack ) would make me a very happy camper!!!

The Union Jack is the flag of another country, a country that gave us Maralinga and Anzac Day. The fact that Australians and Kiwis died fighting under this flag doesn't justify retaining it. In fact the reason that I am typing on a US keyboard rather than a Japanese or German one is because America came to Australia's and Europe's rescue, not Britain. Perhaps an extra couple of stars and stripes might be more appropriate?

The Australian Flag was adopted after a public competition, there were never any specifications to include the Union Jack.

In 1999 there was a vote to remove all symbols of the Crown ,it was defeated

As a legal Import from the old country Via NZ i think its time both AU and NZ had their own flags, but keep the monarch as head of state , my reason being, how are we going to vote for a head of state, let the politicians vote for us, Tony Abbot for president ,i don't think so , or some one with heaps of money American style, Monarch is cheap and safe it works

The word, "empire", rolls off my tongue like an obscenity. To understand why, one needs to have a true perspective of what empire really means to someone like me.

My parents were interned in a Nazi concentration camp when Hitler's third German empire overran their country.

Mussolini's new Roman empire ravaged the Balkans and North Africa during those same years.

The Soviet imperial boot stomped all over the Baltic states and the Eastern Bloc for 50 years after the war.

When Churchill went cap in hand to the US, he was told that the condition for America to fight against Hitler's imperial ambitions was that England had to relinquish its own empire immediately after the war. Needless to say, Churchill reneged on his promise. Worse still, he repatriated thousands of people to Tito and Stalin, knowing full well that they would all be murdered.

Yesterday the Irish commemorated the Easter Rising of 1916 when they unsuccessfully attempted to eject the British imperial presence from their country.

The world's biggest problem today is Muslim terrorism, and that can be directly attributed to English and French imperialism in the Middle East and India. If the British empire hadn't invaded Palestine, then European Jewry would have remained in Europe or migrated to the US. If the British empire hadn't invaded India, then today there would be no Pakistan, the Muslims wouldn't have The Bomb, and the Taliban would have nowhere to hide.

I lived and worked in Singapore during the late 1980s and early 1990s. This was 25 years after Singapore had gained its independence from Britain. Sadly, however, the locals still had a colonial mentality, and there were two incidents which brought this home to me.

The first was when I was sharing an office with two Chinese colleagues, each of whom had their own business. I was running a business of my own. I needed to move my equipment from my old office to a new one. One of my colleagues had a truck and all three of us loaded it up with my gear. I then went to ride shotgun in the tray but my colleagues both said to me that it would look bad for a white guy to be seen in the tray and argued that it would be better for one of them to sit there. I was both stunned and embarrassed but I insisted that I would not be sitting in the cabin. I did feel awkward sitting in the tray afterwards, though, but only because I felt that the locals were staring at me.

The second instance was when an Indian colleague in Malaysia asked me to come along during a visit to one of his prospective clients. He told me that his client would feel better about engaging his services if he saw that he had a white offsider.

My perspective of Australian monarchists is shaped by the above experiences. I see them as servile lackeys, totally devoid of national pride or self esteem, pathetically clinging to the last remaining vestiges of a best forgotten empire with all that this word entails.
