The continuing saga of our Jayco Silverline

I had to do a double check to see if it was the 1st of Aril today!

I've spent the necessary dollars to have a DC-DC charger installed, aux battery etc. Made up a hi amperage 12v extension cable so I can connect the van up unhitched so if we supplement the power of the van with the 12v of the ute aux battery. We have a 12v inverter fridge so completely dependant on 12v.

Connected it up, left it all over night with the fridge running and expected the aux battery in the ute to be down a bit. Checked it and it was still up to charge. Checked wiring OK. Turned off house batteries and all power lost. So there is no connection for the power from the van to the ute. If we didn't have house batteries nothing would be operating.

Started to explore, undid a tin sharp edged cover and lo and behold there are the two main cables doubled back and covered with red insulation tape. Its got me totally beat how a van could leave a factory, be also tested at the agents work shop for defects, and not have the main power supply from the tow vehicle connected up!!!.

By the way all those wires go around the sharp edge of the frame.

So our list is as follows 1/ fridge doesn't go when we pick up, techy gets it going. 2/ fridge drain hose cut and not reconnected, 3/ Table about to fall away onto the floor 4/ Air conditioner tripping RCD have no 240v power can't fix until 6th April. 5/ Awning end cap where there is a cut out to feed a sun shade into the slot on the roller fitted 90' out cant fit the sun shade, and now 6/ main 12v supply from the vehicle not connected, further there are no wires there for these supply wires to connect to, they're behind the bed somewhere!

This is Jayco's top of the line caravan, the place needs a good shake up if you ask me.

You now have me worried as we get our off-road journey sometime in April. Have read other concerns about final inspections.

We took our motorhome for a Jayco Service once, guy in the next bay had a brand spanking new van - he also had an exercise book of "items to be looked at and repaired" - one of which was the wheel brace supplied would not fit his wheels - and it was a cross shaped four ender. Had friends whose airconditioning would not work, it was 49c in Mildura!!! Friend who is a fridgie regassed it - it ran out. Took it back to Jayco - can't find anything, they regassed it. Still happening so he said to Jayco he was not leaving the premises until he got satisfaction.

Ended up a wall near the bed was dismantled, there was the culprit - some bright spark had put a screw right through where the aircon was, piercing the unit!

The cowl around our hatch in the middle of the roof, kept falling off, usually if you were walking under it, of course!!!!

We have not had any major issues with the Jayco product, but would perhaps look elsewhere if we were to buy another motorhome.

Rainy1850 - when you get your van - go away for a weekend, before you set off - use EVERYTHING - some towns out there are a long way from a service centre.

I had a talk with the Dometic rep at the Perth show, and he suspected something of that nature would be the cause of the problem with our air con.
But its a bit poor, we have used the van twice and we are now grounded, the only power we have is 12v solar.
I do hope people read this and take heed.
Don't get a grey water tank installed, it throws all the towing weight out, we can't fill our water tanks as we will exceed the compliance plate max ball weight. I won't mention what the sales people say about towing and the size of the vehicle required, but we had to stand there at the Perth caravan show and listen to the bullsh-it about how Jayco must market a top product and can't afford to have warranty issues, god help us!

There's been numerous threads and posts relative to Jayco's quality or lack thereof , however it was always maintained that their after sales service was the best and sort of made up for that. Looks like this is a thing of the past too.

I feel for you

People talk a lot about Jayco's warranty work as very good, but I think people may be missing the point that there shouldn't be any need to return their van for warranty work!
We've had 2 Jayco campers, and would never look at them again. The doors would fly open on the freeway! Let alone "off road"! Cupboards etc are very lightweight. Wiring is pretty awful.
A friend bought a new van - had no power when free camping even though they'd plugged in the van at home to charge everything up. My hubby (an electrician) found Jayco had forgotten to install a battery! All wiring there, but no battery. How does that get through their pre delivery inspection? And Jayco wanted to argue the point.
Any work we had done took months to be addressed.

Yes Memem, I agree entirely, I would prefer no warranty, and what one brought, was 100% okay. I never mentioned there was no fire extinguisher fitted, this is a mandatory requirement. Some how manufacturers need to be pulled into line. If not we'll all buy Chinese.

Good grief.

This beggars belief .

How on earth does a company stay in bussiness if every single product it turns out is junk .

Gives me a thought for a new thread/topic.
Cheers Al

As I wrote in Als other thread, for every complaint about a Jayco, there are plenty of other folk who buy new vans from other manufacturers and then spend an inordinate amount of time trying to get them repaired under warranty. I related two and know of others. Top shelf and very expensive vans with lots of problems. Happens with new cars, new houses, new computers etc. Its about what the manufacturer does after purchase that is important. I cant fault Jayco, read the other thread, and have and would continue to own Jayco. Though I like my Jayco Conquest motorhome so much I plan to have them dig a big hole when I cark it and have it buried with me. Though the missus will probably take off in it yelling..Free, free at last.....
cheers
phil
