Difference between Forum Sites

Gooday,

Just wondering, I have always gone into this Forum by clicking on Grey Nomads.com.au then click on the General Forum tab and have topics page appear.

Recently another poster asked the best way to access this general forum and another member  kisuggested to enterActive topic The Grey Nomads I think it was.

Curious as to why when you click on the option offered (last one), that there are some topics appear on that page and not on the page where one enters using the Grey Nomads website .

 Cheers,

 Bliss on Wheels.

appear

If you come in via the General Forum way you will only see posts in that forum....if however you enter via View Active Topics you will see posts from ALL forums.

Gooday,
Thank you for the explanations but I still do not understand why there are 2 Forums and some subjects appear on one and not on the other.
Apologies for being so dumb.
Cheers,
Bliss On Wheels.

The Grey Nomads is the web site, and within the website you can click on many things, and when you are posting this is the forum.

If you wan to see what's for sale you click on classifieds and for sale.

Hope this helps.

And if you use this link you will still get to the normal forum, but it will show you all the most recently created posts sorted by age, so you dont need to look throguh all the different sections, it is just one list of most recent posts:

Thanks Nev,

As a newbie to this particular forum, I find it quite "different" to other forums I am on and am still trying to work out the shortcuts. The recent posts tip is appreciated.

The only thing that bugs me now is that whenever I click on any topic, it always takes me to the start (unless I change my settings to 'Newest First', but then the thread is upside down). Every other forum I'm on always takes you directly to the first previously unread post. Even threads I'm subscribed to take me back to the start when I'm notified of activity.

Is there an answer to this, or is it just an idiosyncrasy of this board?

Great board by the way... smile

I know what you mean, a link - when looking at the list of updated threads - to the most recent post (that you have not read) in a thread, rather than the first or last,

I haven't found an option for that, but following this thread to see if anyone else perhaps knows a way

Incidentally, can anyone tell me what the "Permalink" link does next to the Reply and Quote buttons?

Gooday,

Think I can help you on this one, if you open a post, (subject), and  scroll to the bottom of the page you will se a little box with the options listed, Newest First or Oldest First, click on that and change to oldest first.

Like you I am still trying to navigate many aspects of this forum, despite all the explanations offered I am still not sure why we have two different ways to read the Forum, and they are not identical when you do go to them both.

Also wondering is there a setting somewhere hidden on this Forum where you can put your signature so you do not have to type it each time you make a post or a reply.

 Thank you in Advance.

Cheers,

 Bliss on Wheels.

Gday...

Regarding setting an avatar, signature and/or various other settings, click on your 'member name' eg 'blissonwheels' either near the top of each page, or on your name in a post/reply you have made.

You will see this 'menu' on the left hand side -

GN Forum.JPG

Click on each of the 'menu items' to see what you can do within them - eg Edit Profile to update your profile - or Settings to choose the various settings you would prefer.

I assume you have been into those menus to have uploaded your avatar. confuse

If you look at the bottom left corner, under the 'white box' where you type, you will see this -

GN Forum File.JPG

To attach a photo simply click on the button Attach File(s) and it will allow you to browse your computer (or access where you have your photos stored) ... follow any instructions.

You can insert the photo into the body of your post by clicking on the Insert button ... if you don't want it to appear in the body of the post, don't click on anything and it will appear as a clickable thumbnail at the bottom of your post AFTER  you click on Submit Post.

Hope that helps a little bit. As a wise old lady told me when Windows first came in, you will find that everything you need to know will be on the screen SOMEWHERE - just click on things and see what they take you to. Eventually you will find what you need to know to do the things you want/need. Experimentation is king

Cheers - John

Gday...

You stirred my curiosity - hadn't thought about it before ... this is what Google provided -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permalink

Dunno if it helps - but it is something hmm

Yes, I did see that as well John, and I kinda get what they're saying, but I guess I'm a bit slow as I'm having trouble relating that to how such a link would work on this board.

I have clicked it, but did not notice anything happening... no

There are actually 20 forums listed when you click on the "Forums" on the Grey Nomads site. The site is set up this way so you can post your question in the best forum to get the appropriate replies. You can also look through a particular forum to get the info without having to go through everything (that's the theory and it works well in the newsgroups that are more disciplined than this one.)

Many of us concentrate on a few forums. If you post your questions in inappropriate forums we do not see them. You should select the most appropriate forum. I note that some single travellers post questions in the Solo Grey Nomads forum that technical people can answer for you. I only see these occasionally.

One of the ways of seeing new postings that has not been mentioned is the use of the Email Digest of New Topics. Go to "User Details" at the top of the page. Then click on "Settings" on the LHS. Then go to "Email Digest of New Topics" and set up how often you would like the digest to be emailed to you. Complete the changes you make by clicking on "Save Changes" at the bottom of the page. Give it a try to see if it is useful to you.

Permalink is for when you want to link to a specific post in a topic, and have it come up as the first post when someone clicks the link.

1. click the permalink button

2. copy the browser bar information

3. paste the browser bar information in you post as a link eg. http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t61847919/difference-between-forum-sites/?sort=firstEntry&page=1#comment-61894137

when someone clicks on your link they will be taken to the post you directed them to.

 Ahhhh, many thanks Troopy. smile

That makes sense. Maybe that should be noted somewhere in the Introduction pages on how to use this site?
