Testing Electric Brakes.

Going to do a routine maintenance check on my camper brakes shortly.

Can I test them with a 12v battery by connecting to the appropriate pin on the plug.    Every time I do the maintenance I think I should have got some info about doing it that way. Not wanting to burn wiring out of course.

I have to manoeuvre the Avan and  turn it around,    to the Tug,  plug in to activate the brakes.   This  has the Avan parked in a  bad position on my driveway to have the wheels off and it up an Axle stands.   Don't like working under it in this awkward parking area.

If I can use my spare battery to do the testing when I adjust them,     it would be so much safer and easier to do it on the flat  parking area.

Your so right there.     I  never work under vehicles without putting Stand Jacks (two or even four)  under.

I used to do it as a job, working on mobile plant maint,   and of course have experienced and seen the near misses,   when a vehicle crashes down.  Luckily never any injuries occurred in those instances.  It was always those "just do a quick job" underneath that created these near misses.

I have a friend who's brother was killed that way, Using Bricks as stand jacks.   Not a very nice thing to witness  for the family.

2 things to watch - get the polarity right because if you accidently brush the hot (+) lead against another terminal you may blow whatever is connected and do not keep the power to the brakes on for longer that 5 seconds as you can overheat the magnet - this is because you will be supplying 12V to the magnet whereas in normal operation the magnets get much reduced power except in an emergency situation.

Good Luck.

The easiest way to check electric brakes is to pull out the breakaway insert - have someone near the wheel and you can hear the brake pad clunking, or if you have the wheel up then try to turn it with the break away insert pulled out!
