EPIRB Battery replacement

 Hi all,

We got a email to update our EPIRB X 2 with com sat two days ago.

So I updated both of our units . One is the older MT400 unit with a lessor positioning indicator, so we use it as a second backup unit. the battery is up for renewal. So I just checked the cost to replace the  battery =$279.00 GME.

On Ebay we can buy the latest MT600 total for $218.95 from Mr Boats here in Sydney.confuseconfuseconfuseconfuseconfuse

We will deregister this old unit and get the latest tecnoligy for 2/3's the price.smile

I also read that some folks use an external 6V battery on older units, as a back up in their car.no

I hope I don't expire just as Quickly.crycrycry

Better safe then sorry.

Jim

Yes, I checked this out when my battery came up for renewal. I threw it away and bought a new EPIRB...Cheaper. If you discard an old EPIRB, don't forget to advise the Australian Maritime Safety Authority...

The manual states that the unit is powered from two Lithium Li-SO2 D-cells.

FWIW, the Saft BA-5800A/U is a US made military grade 6V battery consisting of two LiSO2 D-cells.

Here is one site selling it for US$44:

www.batteriesdirect.com/product/details/military-grade-batteries/saft/ba-5800a-u

I don't know whether the above battery fits into your device (probably not), but ISTM that there should be sources of suitable military grade alternatives.

Hey Jim re (On Ebay we can buy the latest MT600 total for $218.95 from Mr Boats here in Sydney) That's a good price. Thanks

Am thinking of getting such a unit, for our boat even though we don't go out that far from land and mainly go out with a mate along with his boat. And this EPIRB can be used on water and land, unlike the PLB that should only be used on land, so when we go remote can keep the EPIRB in the Lcruiser.

If I go ahead will probably go with the MT600G with the GPS function that gives the searches nearly your exact position ($100 more) rather than the MT600 that gives the searches a 5sqKm? area. (from memory, both with 10 year Battery).
