Jayco Swan Outback Roof Solar


Hi

I want to put a solar panel on the roof of a Jayco Swan Outback

I will use brackets and Silaflex to hold it down

But I would feel better if I put some screws in the brackets as well as Silaflex

Anyone know the construction under the fibre glass roof - I guess there is ply wood but I want to know the thickens of the plywood without hitting any wiring or the screws showing inside

Frankly I'd be reluctant to put any extra weight on a wind-up roof.

Can you consider putting the panel on the tug roof or maybe a portable unit?

Hi all;

        While i have to agree with cloak, re the mounting of solar pannels on your jayco swan roof, why not get in contact with jayco service department and ask for there advise . Especialy if you are unshure of the bracing with internal structure of the roof.

I did that with my own Jayco discovery pop top due to the wireing for the 12 Volt lighting. Payed to ask and once they gave me the insite as to were to drill the hole for my solar panels, l had no problems with the running of the cable. As for the mounting of the L brackets for the solar pannels i used silican and pop rivits every 120 mm apart. 3 years and 15000 Kms and no problems with movement or water ingest.

I got in contact with Jayco yesterday and they said there would be no problem mounting the 200 watt panel on the roof -15.6 kg
Also I talked to a guy that repairs broken cable to lift the roof of this type of van and he confirmed there would be no problem with this weight

Why not use one of the plastic semi flexibles? They are much, much lighter (and only around 3mm thick. Given their low profile I'd use silicon rather than sikaflex, Sikaflex is difficult to remove without causing damage, whereas silicon can be removed relatively easy. Many of the semi flexibles also have holes at each corner for fasteners.   Weight for 2 x 100 watt panels would be around 3 kgs.
