W/bool, Woolsthorpe, Penshurst, Hamilton, Horsham, Dimboola, Warracknabeal, Hopetoun, Lascelles, Ouyen, Mildura. That is the quickest way and the way we always go. A few good camp spots along the way and good views of the Grampians

Yes that would be the quickest route and it is also a very pleasant drive and as leajoy said there is some good camping spots as well. Rod.

For a long time I have not told others about Hopetoun, some already know about the lake, but selfishly I kept the secret to myself for fear it would become too popular. My thoughts have now changed.
I believe the more people that know the better for the town and perhaps this will set an example to other towns. If more town follow suit, the better for us all.
Having seen so many struggling country towns where the only profitable business is the privately owned van park raping all the money out of the local economy, usually with the proprietor being a council member vehemently opposed to free camping, personally I'd like to everycommercial van park closed downbut that is another discussion.

Lake Lascelles on the edge of Hopetoun is a magnificently prettycamping spot.

I was told by the caretaker that council have decided to make this a free camp permanently. Although the council run fee paying park is still open closer to the main street, nobody uses it. Council have decided that if they can attract a lot morecampers who don't have to spend their money in a van park, then these folks will spend some of that money in town. Their view is if they can increase the shops turnover by 10% then this will be enough to keep them in business andtherefore the residents who live there permanently won't loose their cafe, bakery, butcher, IGA, etc and the town wont die.

Darned bit of excellent out of the box forward thinking in my opinion and we should all support this township.
Don't forget to mention to the local shops that you chose to stay at the free camping by the lake so you could spend your money in town rather than seeinganother countrytown die because of greedy caravan parks.

Gold coin donation to use the excellent toilets and hot showers. $20 a night in an honesty envelope if you want power.

Grassy sites, fire bins provided, plenty of fish in the lake, and if you want to be far away from everyone else there is a couple of kilometers of bush camping by the waters edge as well.

Hilife I couldn't agree more. Hopetoun is a wonderful little town with a good understanding of how the lake and free camping by donation keeps the town alive. We are heading off soon on an extended trip and Hopetoun will be a nights stop for us.

If Hopetoun is a bit far then Brin and Beulah are both possible stopping places south of Hopetoun.
Brin is a basic site but large, lots of shade trees, showers, and a large water storage/lake all for a donation at the local servo.

Beulah also is worth a look as its is more organised than Brin with laid out van sites and from memory some with power.
