Hi all I am planning a trip to Cape York  and I will be heading pretty much up the middle until about Hughenden then I will reassess my options .

I will be going through Broken Hill and on to Wilcannia I would the like to go along the Darling to Bourke has any one traveled this road before I relies if it has been raining it will be out of the question but what is the road like in normal times.

Is there any free camps along the way or is the pubs at Tilpa and Louth the only places to stay and about how long does the trip take if you are just cruising I imagine 2 days .

Call in for fuel at the fuel depot in the back streets. The proprietor delivers fuel up the Darling. ask him the current road conditions before heading up there. There is a sign as you come in from the west telling you how to get to him. He is much cheaper then the service station on the highway as well.

There is a track both sides of the Darling. I asked the local police in Wilcannia and got all the local info.

We went along the east side at that stage. A good free camp at Louth. Go over the bridge and directly behind the pub. Plenty of room,

shade and right on the river bank. Damn good pub at Louth too. Also the Pilba pub is worth a stop. Lots of history there.

G'day all,

Don't comment much only observe. Henry1 the darling river is dry from Broken Hill up. Menindee lake empty. Broken Hill's water supply is down to 8% on their last dam. Town is desperate for fresh water. NSW Govt. is doing their best to supply permanent water supply. See ABC Broken Hill. The roads to Bourke are hit and miss after rain. Call in at Wilcannia Shire Offices for details. Pubs at Tilpa and Louth are a must to see. These people need our support. Camping not a problem. Louth pub has cabins.

Thanks alpalkaye, I went to Menindee Lakes 18 months ago that's when I got the urge to travel up the Darling. There was not a lot of water in the lakes then.

I cant really understand why they allow irrigation when they must know the effect that it has on the river,lakes and Broken Hill.
