saving money

never ceases to amaze me what grey nomads try to save money on, things like cheap wheel studs, wheel bearings and all the other things people talk about saving money on. some of these things could be life saving . So we drive around in a $50000+ dollar tug, towing a $60000 van and then wont spend a few dollars more on a quality item. I understand lack of funds but if I cant afford quality I go without.

cheers

Hi Robert,

So you would continue on down the Highway on three wheel studs only.nonono Not very responsible behaviour.hmm  They may be on a pension only for all we know.

Lets say benefit of the doubt.smilesmilesmile

Thanks Blaze Yer we saved a few dollars . Better in our pocket then theirs. The studs we got came from a company that has been making them for over 50 yrs
they must be doing something right.
Only passed this on more from point of caravan yard NOT doing their work they said they had done and what may of happened if we had a flat kms from anywhere.
Van is a long way south of 50000 gran, but we like it.

I always buy the cheapest or go second hand, actually I prefer second hand simply because I get a kick out of not paying new price - whatever floats your boat. It's human nature to want more for less, ask any salesman. If someone is happy to pay top price then so be it.

Denis

when I do wheel bearings on a trailer I rarely take the wheels off, so don't undo wheel nuts. Its not just about bearings etc. but lots of things. Things like shopping only in big towns, carrying enough fuel to get across the nulla, travelling 10km to save 2 cents a litre, knocking off the toilet rolls from public toilets etc. etc
just trying to understand
cheers

Yes thanks for the tip. There are plenty of people buying 2nd vans who will find this very informative.

A bit of bad luck but as you say you found it in time and that's the main thing.

Blaze - youre being a bit over the top suggesting people who don't buy the very best of everything, which is what you seem to be suggesting by then putting them and us in the same league as people who pinch toilet paper from public loos.

I do agree with you about saving $3 by spending $15 or whatever travelling across town to buy slightly cheaper fuel

I carry 50 lt of spare diesel with our van and sometimes do use it going across the Nullaboor - just depends on how expensive it is compared to waiting to the far end - but its mainly in case we need it to keep us on the move. From experience we have found the servos in some small towns close on certain days.

Gday...

Understand your point, blaze. However, my old gran used to say you needed to be penny wise rather than pound foolish to get on in this world.

So I think where I can save a penny then I am on the right track.

I do agree with the wisdom of not sacrificing quality - but I don't think that price has ever been the major determinant of quality. confuse

I totally agree with you Blaze. There is nothing that irritates me more than people who wish to portray the trappings of wealth yet won't put their hand in their kick to pay an appropriate price for an item or a delivery of service. This mentality of sniffing about trying to save two cents is probably not about the money at all, just an inner pleasure in thinking they have outsmarted someone else.

One usually finds that people who are mean with their money also adopt the same mindset with other areas of their personality, whether it be kindness, empathy or just offering help.

I understand how some people are on a tight budget and I have no issue with that. It is just those tight **ses that scrooge away at all things financial and then wear it as a badge of honour to highlight their self perceived brilliance in all things fiscal.

Gday...

I am NOT making a personal attack on you DMaxer ..... but ....

I think if that is your genuine attitude then it is a very shallow, closed-minded, mean-minded and bordering on arrogant attitude. hmm

Sorry - to assume that thriftiness is only with those you describe, is quite sad ... and paints more of an unfortunate picture of your outlook rather of those you castigate.

Cheers - John

Perhaps you might like to read the first line of the third paragraph Rocky.

If you still maintain your outrage then perhaps I have hit a nerve.

Gday...

Actually, I did read that DMaxer hmm

"I understand how some people are on a tight budget and I have no issue with that. It is just those tight **ses that scrooge away at all things financial and then wear it as a badge of honour to highlight their self perceived brilliance in all things fiscal."

A laudable expression to show a modicum of empathy. However, the remainder of that paragraph simply reinforces your actual attitude. cry

Cheers - John

You May be suprised that on those $60000 + Vans the manufacturer chases the cheapest prices for parts as well so he can save as much as he can.

take the dust cap off, remove split pin, undo casalated nut, remove wheel along with brake drum, At times there is not enough clearance for the wheel to do it this way on vans

cheers

Thank you so much for your unsolicited psychoanalysis Rocky. The plain truth is that there is nothing underlying, covert or hidden about my attitude.

I don't like mean spirited, tight fisted people disguised as bargain hunters. If you can't handle my likes and dislikes that is your problem.

I know I'm dumb but wouldn't a truck brake drum with wheel attached be a lot heavier than a truck brake drum ?

As a Cairns local I would have gone to the place that sold the cheap studs in the first place. (Taylors Trailers)
They specialise and build trailers and their prices are way under the big name stores.
Been in English St for donkeys years so must be doing something right.

That is if I have the right one
The other one is Warpac on Buchan St and they service my caravan annually and their prices are as good

Sometimes people do find a decent bargain

Hi,

My Wife loved canned tuna & would only buy name brands such as John West. No way would She even think of a store brand (Coles / Woolworths ). I would try to convince Her that the stores were retailers not manufacturers/processors, waste of time.

Then  due to a problem in the canning process there was a recall of Two big names & two store brands, She still bought the big name brands.

I would like to know where both sets of wheel studs in the original post were manufactured. I do know which set I would buy & if I drank I'd have a couple of bob for a drink.

Mike.

Would you buy a Ford Courier or a Mazda B2600?
A Leader or a Supreme caravan?
A Ford Maverick or Nissan Patrol?

There are those who don't want to pay the price and those who can't afford to......that's life.

No, you either slide them out on a greasy chainsaw bar or use a purpose built wheel trolley

cheers

I can not believe this . I posted about a problem i found which could off been had a lot worst result if we had not been staying where we are and been out on the road somewhere.
I do know about the dust cover BUT as never having the wheels off before i thought i may as well check the brakes at the same time`.
Thanks Wauri.. not being a local did not know about Taylors trailers, until after i had been to the wreckers who sent me to them.
The company that make the studs have been around 50 plus yrs (thanks mr google). Yes maybe made over seas. company Aust/nz.

You are so right woody, this thread is by me about what people do to save a few bucks, as I pointed out - just trying to understand. I have only been replying to question. Seems you have had the need to explain yourself as have I with no malice or ill feeling to anyone or any views on my topic of saving money.
I just asked the question and people have freely given opinions
cheers

Of course the other way of looking at it is:

A fool and his money are soon parted........
