Am I a smartarse or just lucky?.....

I got my Licence in 1964 as a 16 year old lad in S.A...used to drive my 'Puch' motor scooter to School etc in my 'Mod' days......driven all over Australia except Tasmania.....<at this stage>...point being I've never had a speeding fine in 52 years of driving.....

I'm so glad they did not have breathalizers when I was a youth or my impeccable driving record may be considerably tarnished.....I must have been incredibly lucky as I went to all band/dance venues like the Octagon,Princeton, etc etc with the Twilights/Glen Shorrock etc performing.....had my mandatory 6 long neck Southwick Bitters with my mates, to give me the confidence to actually dance..like many did in those days..lmao...never got picked up for anything.........52 years later my family still say I'm a boring old fart to drive with as I never go over the limits...my GPS helps me with all the speed limit changes these days...

Picked up twice in all that time and talked my way out of both...some years ago I went close....Angle Vale Rd Angle Vale S.A., with cars invariably speeding past me in the dual lane I suddenly had a policeman waving me over... "You're doing 64 in a 60 Zone Sir.....".Schucks first time in nearly 50 years I said...."if you want to dispute, you are welcome to go back to the camera and you will be shown your speed Sir"....in the magic of the moment I said I will go and check, as I was the slowest of both lanes...with my daughter's voice in the back asking if "Daddy was going to Jail Mum?"...I went back to a sheepish Constable who was busy packing up...he said he couldn't show me as he had packed up...I said well you must have it recorded?..he said I can't show you my batteries are flat"...I could see a glimmer of blue sky opening up for me.I asked how long they had been flat..all he gave me was his Constable Number....I received a ticket at the other end, and I told them I would dispute...long story short, I received a phone call from S.A. Prosecutions in due course.."We are willing to forget it if you are"...the Constable is now on Kangaroo Island...."...I said no..not good enough... as my wife kicked me hard in the shin bone...alright, that will be O.K. I said......

Going through Tooberac Vic recently..with horse float on and doing my nearly 50 in the 50 zone and I saw the "hidden car" across the road at the time...I received a ticket doing 53 in 50 Zone..filling his quota no doubt...I requested a photo as I knew he could only get me front, with the horse float on,  and from the other side of the Street with much Sunday traffic in between us...going both ways...Tooberac is a notorious 50 zone which is always monitored for revenue raising, as you have to brake to get under 50...

I told Vic Prosecutions that I would contest and I had 52 years clear driving against the non police individual in the "hidden car".. I then the heard a familiar sentence.. ..they asked if I was prepared to drop the matter, if they were, and would I accept a warning......ouch... a second whack to my shin from wifey.........

So, unbelieveably, I remain a 'clean skin' with no speeding fines in 52 years....are there other Nomads that have been as lucky as me?...........the 52 years has gone like a blink of an eye.....no doubt same for us all?....

I just realized this sounds like an Epistle from the Mount, from our much loved 'Young Simmo'......I apologise if an apology is required......Hoo Roo

I am basically the same although been driving for 55 years and one speeding fine but quite a few times have been pulled over and simply 'let off'. I've never had the temerity to question what they say, just apologise and say how sorry I am. It helps to live in small towns as well. With so many unmarked Police cars in Qld of late plus speed cameras I think our good run may be coming to an end.

Regards

Gday...

I got my licence in 1965 and got to 1968 before my first fine for doing 38mph in a 35mph zone at 3am fer gawds sake not another vehicle anywhere except for me and the copper.

I was involved in motor sport from 1966 until 1983 and never got another fine in that time I guess I got all the ballsy driving out of my system in the sport and not on the road.

Interestingly, the last event I drove in was in October 1983 ... and I picked up a fine in St Kilda Road Melbourne about 9am one November Sunday morning in 1983 yeah 64kph in a 60kph zone. cry

Since then I have not had a single speeding or any other traffic infringement so that is 33 years.

Being a non-drinker I have obviously never been pinged for drink driving. Although, because all my mates were heavy drinkers, I was always the driver.

I would love a dollar for every time a copper pulled me over to breath test me (because of the obvious car full of drunken yobbos), I'd wind down the window and the fumes would drift out all over Mr Plod who would instantly get a big grin on his face.

"Blow into this!" I would gladly oblige and of course the result was a lovely ZERO. Exit annoyed Mr Plod

Please do NOT tell anyone I am sure Murphy will be reading this forum and I do NOT want to aggravate him.

Cheers - John

My last speeding ticket was in 1970, when I  was a  young smartarse in NSW and tried to outrun a Cooper S.  Bad mistake.....

Great recollection Goldfinger. I and many other miss Young Simmo - pity he was booted.....

We're staying in an area of south Perth which has lots of drivers who drink (truckies and tradies - and my apology to those in these two professions who don't). In the past 2 weeks, we have been stopped 3 times during the day or early evening at random booze bus sites. I hadn't been drinking - I do drink, but don't drive.

I did 15 years in a job where I saw so many people killed or permanently injured from drink driving - most of them young and too many of them just children not in proper restraints in vehicles driven by drunken parents.

A mate of mine owns a bottle O in north Perth. He opens at 7am on weekdays as he gets so many tradies drive in to buy a small bottle of spirits to drink in the way to work for the "hair of the dog" from the afternoon/evening before. Just have to drive into many pub car parks at 3pm to see all these guys drinking up. And they build our houses and install the electrics etc - frightening !!

And once again I apologize to those tradies and truckies on this site that don't heavily drink and drive.............

I think that we lived in an era when the roads were not so congested, and the boys in blue were thin on the ground, goldfinger. By the time we were actually picked up for speeding, we probably should have been old enough to have known better, LOL

I received my licence in Kalgoorlie WA 1966. In those days there was no speed restrictions on the highway, and only one traffic patrol man in the area. Around 1985 or thereabouts, I was back in Kal. This time there were plenty of traffic patrol men. The boy in blue who caught me, had a mother in law who was a very good friend of my mother in law, his wife was also a friend of my wife. I was therefore in a nodding acquaintance with him. He picked me up for speeding three times in as many months. When I realised that I only had two points left on my licence, the penny dropped. I have never had the urge to speed since. I thought that it was a fair cop, and that the man was just doing his job.
