Flinders Rangers

Hey All

i am new to this site so just working out how to use it. We will be travelling to the Flinders Ranges in SA in May and camping at Rawnsley Station. Was hoping to do some short walks or at least get in some great sites. Maybe drive up,to Blinkan.

Any suggestions or advice. Will only be there 2 days as passing through.

2 days isn't much, you'll see a lot in that time but miss a whole lot more. The office / shop complex sells National Park passes and has a stack of info as does the info office in Wilpena Pound which is just up the road. Be careful if its rained recently as the mud sticks like the proverbial to the blanket. There is a vehicle wash down bay at the back end of the caravan park - if you do get a bit muddy clean it as quickly as possible - makes life a whole lot easier. We found the staff at the CP friendly and helpful and, of course, there are heaps of other RV's who are only too happy to help and tell the stories of their time in the Ranges.

Enjoy it, regards

Dave

Climb Rawnsley Bluff. That will take up 1 day and really get the blood pumping.

  1. Expensive, but a flight over the Lake, lunch at William Creek pub etc. is highly recommended. The view over Wilpena Pound and the ranges is spectacular! There was a plane taking off from Rawnsley Park Station airstrip.
  2. We've been there twice.  Good spot to stay.  They have fuel, and limited supplies.
  3. We would recommend camping at Warren Gorge around from Quorn also.  Or, last trip we camped at Brachina Gorge north of Rawnsley Park and Wilpena.  Fantastic spot.  Get great pics of the Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies through that country too.

If they are still doing the camel safaris from Blinman do a half-day one. I did one a few years ago and it was GREAT. A very memorable experience. So different to riding horses - camels are very sure-footed. Lucky you - that's a great part of the world at that time of year.

Haha Bushpie I'm with you and that's exactly why I joined this forum. I have trips planed for the next 8 years just have to find the best spots and make sure I can get the most out of them. In May we are going from Brisbane to Mount Gipps Station , north of Broken Hill, then to Rawnsley Station, Coober Pedy, curtain Springs, where we will do the Mt Connor tour, Yulara, west Macs, East Macs, Devils marbles, back through Julia creek to visit family and then the Thompson river cruise in Longreach. If you want info on those areas I will be home mid June and happy to report.

Bushpie I would love some feed back on Karijini. I am planning a trip when I am 60 to WA and want to go there. From what I can find out its best to camp at the Eco center but there aren't many tours for half cripples like me. Mind you I have only just started looking so any advice and real information would be great. We are not 4 wheel drives but have a AWD and camper trailer so don't want miles of corrosion so etc.
Is the best side to go in from Tom Price?
