Fiat Ducato automatic 3l diesel motorhome

Hi everyone, just had a big storm through here in Thornlands in Redlands area of Qld, just after we found out our motorhome won't go into reverse.

It is booked in for a service on 17th February but they cannot get us in any earlier.  Does anyone out there own a similar unit and have you have experienced this problem.   Start engine, take out of neutral and should go straight down to reverse but won't select reverse.  Any information would be good for a start.

Hope this doesn't hold us up for the start of our trip end March.

Cheers all

Hi loosecannan

If everything was working before the storm then you may have something blown up around the linkages. I am not familiar with the gearbox but if you can slide under with a torch and check for debris that may have been deposited by the storm.

Try disconnecting the battery terminal leave off for about five minutes and then connect up again this resets the computer

the battery is under the floor on left hand side hope this helps

Had a friend whose car would not go into reverse. Had a blown fuse, worth checking

there is a auto transmission fuse under the bonnet f24 is the number it is in the big box on the right but if you have forward gears it won't be a fuse

On some vehicles if it is parked on a slope up/downhill using the PARK transmission facility, the pressure on the PARK pawl is such that it is impossible to shift from PARK to R....solution is to push/move vehicle gently against slope of hill to relieve pressure on PARK pawl allowing it to release.
Good Luck.

Hi Dragon  looks as though you are driving a Fiat Ducato.  Going to try the test of disconnecting battery tomorrow.  Have you experienced this problem with your unit ?  All the experts we have spoken to want to charge a million dollars to diagnose it over 4 hours plus.

Some say hydraulic problem

Some say selector arms

One mechanic (whom I would trust the most says it is a solenoid under the transmission) and asked if we had been through any water.  We have not.

One even said a rebuild.

So we will try your trick tomorrow and let's hope that is problem.

Cheers for now and a good evening from windy (meaning blowing a gale) here in Thornlands
