Why is it when a poster asks a question that has been asked before (and lets face it the internet is at an age where there are not many questions that havent been asked ) the post police immediately jump on them with comments like :
This has been asked before ,just do a search .
Or
You asked this question 6 months ago .........
Things change as will the answers , technologies are evolving at breakneck speads . Opinions change .
So why not ask a question that has been done before to get the latest opinions , even the experts may learn something .
A lot of people become forum shy and are lost to this or that forum , often to the detriment of the knowledge pool, because people are wary of being jumped on for daring to ask a question that has been asked before.
I agree Swoffer. Its usually a newbie who asks the question that has been covered so many times before and they don't need to be "beaten up" for doing so.
Ive attached a reply I sent to another person earlier this week who asked a well flogged question and answer. Hopefully it was done in a pleasant manner and didn't upset or chase the poster away:

Hi David. This subject has been well talked about before with lots of feedback - obviously you missed them :))
Go to the top of the page and open the search facility and type in "ambulance cover" or "ambulance insurance". Theres heaps of recent advice sitting in these previous posts.
Good luck with your travels and hope your insurance stays un-used
As long as the reply saying that the subject has been covered before is reasonably polite then we see nothing wrong with pointing out the fact.
Only reasonably polite DD ?
Just for me because I havent been around long , who is the "we" you are talking about ?
My wife & I that both regularly visit this forum. Is that enough information? We share our interests & our online activities. Do we meet your stringent requirements?

I am a mod on car forum and they are mainly under 30 year olds .. I assume on here ? Most are over 50 and Computer skills are not the best .. Good on them for leaning in most cases.. So be a little aware , it's not like some teenager being silly .. Often the answer is easier than the lecture too .. I keep telling my Mrs this the last 40 years ... Yes it's easier to fathom computers than the other sex .. Lol Flame suite on upset 51% of population.. Aha
btw the question that gets me on car forums is what is the best exhaust .. Sheesh !

Yeh , I can imagine A-K .
I don't frequent car forums but I can imagine a question like for instance , what exhaust do I need for my 70 series that I am going to put a turbo on ?
Probably been asked a thousand times right ? But not by me and not in the last 6 months for instance and ive heard whispers that maybe I need 3 1/2 inch Instead of 3 inch is the latest thinking. Someone on the car forum will know but bugger that, someone will just jump down my throat fot asking a much asked question . Not usually mods I hasten to add , most are really good . I refer to the posting nazi's.

I try to say "did a quick search and found this "xxxxxxx"
That way they get the info and a reminder about searching.
I reckon if everyone searched for their answers before asking you'd have no new members ever joining because most questions have answers if you look.
So I'm with you Swoffer.
I think I must be one of the "posting nazi's" to whom you refer
If so, and if it is for my (what I thought) helpful direction to the poster's original question - which contained considerable, and informative, responses - then I am guilty as charged.
However, it was posted as an assistance/mind jogger to the poster so they could review the earlier provided information - which I thought was being of assistance.
I think the basis for your pointed accusations, that have prompted your post, are somewhat exaggerated - I would suggest that the number of responses to questions by posters where reference is made to "use the search function" etc would be infinitesimal in comparison to the large number of posts/questions generated by members. Indeed, many new members are unaware there is even a Search function on the forum (albeit not a very good search engine )
But, it is your perception, and opinion, so I shall defer to your highlighting of the issue. I shall endeavour to be more careful in providing advice to members who ask the [edit: their OWN] same question for a second (or third) time - and in how I word that advice.
Cheers - John

we were all new to this site some days ago
I only can say this : Give them a break, if they knew how to look for things, they wont be asking the questions
2 : I think I must be one of the "posting nazi's" to whom you refer

Hi John
1 : isnt that what forums are all about ?
2 : I am certainly not pointing a finger at anyone in particular , im not aware of the thread you are refering to though im sure if I did a search I could find it
My reason for starting this thread is simply that I know 2 separate people/families that wont post , infact wont even sign up for tbe reason ive stated and if there are 2 groups in my very limited circle it stands to reason that there are others who's contributions we miss out on .
Anyway , as I said it's nothing personal aimed at anyone in particular (but if the cap fits as they say ) its just what I see .
Why is it when a poster asks a question that has been asked before................. the post police (who are now also posting nazi's) immediately jump on them with comments like :
~~~SNIP You asked this question 6 months ago .........
.................people are wary of being jumped on for daring to ask a question that has been asked before.
Gday...
But you do realise it was/is your opinion that started this thread
and I had done EXACTLY what you are berating the 'post police' and 'posting nazi's' for, hence my overwhelming feelings of remorse.
Not to worry Al, I am thick headed ..... oops, sorry thick skinned
Cheers - John
I have been on this forum a long time and seen bullies come and go, I have also seen good constructive advice and ideas, thats why we have this forum to help, guide and assist our fellow nomads. If a question is repeated a few times so what? The answer is all you need to post, not a smart a@#se comment... Rant over
I think its a age related issue, the older we get, the grumpier we get. And looking at the demographics of this forum, we are mostly a Grumpy bunch and before anyone jumps down my throat, I know I'm grumpier than I was a few years ago but I do try to make my posts less aggressive by carefully choosing the words I use to set the tone of the post.
My grandkids accuse me of being grumpy as does my wife and daughters... IM NOT BLOODY GRUMPY!!!!! i think???
I agree with Bryan, patience and tolerance of drongos seems to fly out the window after retirement.. Anyway, life is too short to be too grumpy, Brian all of us need to be careful what we write on any forum.. words can cut deep wounds.
Take care
Phil - I agree with you entirely about words can wound deeply. Unfortunately, spoken words can often be mis-read or taken in a different way to the way the originator intended.
Typed comments lack voice inflection (shouted or said quietly for example), face expression (angry or smiling) and all the other things that face to face conversation gives us when communicating with others.
Last year I made several comments to Posts made by others and was horrified when it received adverse reactions. You never know how other people will interpret what you intend to be an innocent and/or helpful remark.
Now I read my typing 1-2 times before I hit the "send" button to try and avoid unintended hurtful or offensive comments
Exactly my point Phil .
Gday...
Gentlemen, it appears we are in agreement.
Hence I am perplexed to why this thread even began ..... let alone the protracted berating of others.
Surely this reply, below, to a poster's question was exactly that .... giving an answer to their question. In fact, a string of valid and informative answers.
