hi i have a 2015 ranger 3.2 auto towing a 3.2 T silverline after about an hour of towing it develops a whining noise ,sounds like and electonic servo ,constant not rpm related it only doese it after towing for an hour or more as soon as you stop so doese the whining BIT HARD TO TAKE IN TO DEALER WITH VAN ON with out the van it is fine ,woundering if my be the alteranator ,no lights on the dash and no faults codes
we have done 7,000ks of towing before this started
HMMMMM ... trying to diagnose a whining noise .... never easy.
You say the noise only becomes evident after an hour or so of TOWING and then disappears as soon as you stop.
Perhaps it could be the bearing in the radiator fan - they are usually a 'viscous' coupling these days and perhaps it doesn't begin to spin up to any speed until the coolant has reach a quite high temperature.
Then it 'locks up' causing the bearing to take up the load and begin to whine.
When you stop and the motor goes to idle, the load comes off the bearing and whine goes.
A test could be that when driving and the whine begins, and the road is straight and you are not surrounded by traffic - eg when it is safe to do so - put it in neutral and let the motor drop back to idle.
Given auto boxes are not real happy in neutral, don't leave in neutral on the move for very long - just long enough to see if the whine disappears.
Otherwise, I have spent too much of my lifetime hunting down whines in motors/transmissions to be sure of anything.

Gosh, hope the noise is not coming from the other front seat. Maybe the passenger just wants a break to stretch legs, etc.
More seriously, are you sure the noise is not the viscous fan kicking in? The clues are the time after starting towing and that the sound is not RPM dependent. John's suggest for a test might be a good first step.

Hi Bob. I don't have anything serious to offer by way of ideas or advice - but just had to say - maybe its all the Ford workers bitching about the business closing down soon LOL
Sorry..................hope yo find out what the noise is and if it is a problem, have it fixed.
It does pay to take it into a Dealer and get them to inspect it. If they tell you - cant find it, because it didn't make the noise, take it to another Dealer and do the same - make sure it goes through the computer system.
In the past vehicle makers and Dealers were very good at not being able to find a problem during the warranty and then finding the expensive fix once the warranty had run out. About 12-18 months ago the ACCC mandated that in such cases, the warranty was extended for problems that had repeatedly been reported and "not found" or fixed. If you report it to the same or preferably several Dealers and make sure they do carry out an inspection (go in an make the booking and watch they log the details into their computer system - don't be given a verbal, no worries mate by the Service Manager), then if it does turn out to be a problem later on, you stand a good chance that it will still be fixed at no cost by Ford, even out of warranty. If they refuse, phone the ACCC

not shure weather the fan is viscous or electric ? thanks for the replys i was starting think alternator bearing as its charging hard when towing ,feeding the fridge ect in the van but its to hit and miss for that went for a drive yesterday down to victor harbour from Adalaid with out the van on ,on way back just before we turned in to the c/p IT STARTED AGAIN ( first time it done it when not towing ) i pulled over to lift the bonnet but it stoped before i could get out , the FAN is a good thought ,
all so they have broblums with blowing the intercooler hoses ,but i would think if it had a small hole in the hose it would make the whining noise every time it came on boost you seam to be able to iduce the noise if you give it a boot full up a hill when its warm but as soon as you slow down to about 5 ks it stops so the fan is looking suspect when you think about it ,im not real happy about throwing it in N as i did that once with a XC fancon going down a hill and it empted the auto box all over the road out through the dip stick hole i guese as it gets worse it will be easer to track down (doesent throw any codes or lights ) so thats a good thing
i tow in S MODE so it doese not get up to 6th normaly but i will pop it in to 6th on a flat with a slight down grade so it come back to low rpm

Bob, I agree that there is a need for caution when putting an auto box into neutral on the move - certainly not a wise move to do so coasting down a hill.
However, if this noise stops very quickly when the motor drops to idle, surely you would only need to hit neutral for less than 10>15 SECONDS .... that should drop the motor back to idle and should remove the load from the fan - and if noise stops (or reduces markedly) that could solve the problem. Then slip auto back into D.

Like others I am just guessing here but I would think it sounds like an electric fan. They usually have several speeds too, by the way, so it may normally be off or just low speed and them kicks up to high speed, which you can hear and the temp drops quickly a few degrees and it switches down again just as quickly.
It is now summer and hotter so it comes on more !
PS there is no reason to be scared of using neutral in an auto for a short time. Just normal safe driving to be taken into account especially down a hill. If loaded up it would not be recommended auto or manual.

If you are towing in sports mode, leave it in 5th, and do NOT use cruise control when in sports mode and going uphill
It has a fail safe that will cause it to lose power and very quickly
It has taken Ford 3 1/2 years to tell me that
Fuel economy will be the same in 5th or 6th but not the same pressure on the motor or gearbox in 5th
I was told by my nephew who owns a late model Ranger, that one of the problems that they have is oil pump noise, often starting at a fairly low mileage. Apparently ford are aware of it and it is caused by the oil pump being mounted above the oil to reduce drag in the motor. Also apparently people complaining about the noise are being told that it is within allowable tolerances. This is hear say to me so make what you will of it. Landy

the px ranger and BT 50 (same engine )have a draining broblum if you take to long changeing the oil the pump wont prime so uou have to presure prime it that is a comen knowalge
but i have never heard of whineing pump did a 100k yesterday with out the van on and it dident whine ?

Is there a two piece drive shaft ? Some times the centre body bearing twists under load vibrating body?
I would disconnect fan serpentine belt to check where its coming from.. For short run..
well left Adlaid this morning up to port wakefield it wined a couple of times going through town (cold )stop start ,then it stoped it dident whine again for the rest of the trip
