Traveling with a Tame Budgie

Hi everyone, we are planning on doing some traveling next year and have a three month old tame budgie we have to take with us. A friend has said that there are restrictions in some states where you cannot take a bird across the border. Is there anyone out there travelling with a bird and have you had any concerns with this.

Thanks

Budgies are an Australian native bird so can be regarded as Aviary birds or native animals therefore it is subject to interpretation, so you may need to contact Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) Ph: (08) 9219 9831; email: wildlifelicensing@dpaw.wa.gov.au

My interpretation of all states regs are that a budgie does not require any form of licence in any state and as long as declared at check points, a budgie, as a pet can go anywhere in Australia except for quarantined areas by Australian Customs. These are usually fenced off areas with razor wire and guards! The only other area that may need clarification is National Parks, my budgie has visited a few and met a few Park Rangers without problems.
The other side of the coin is to train the budgie to go for the jugular if a uniformed person opens the cage! Okay, that was tongue in cheek!
