From your past comments and this one, the MUX should not be represented by Izusu as a real 4x4, but rather a black top (tar sealed road) 4 x 4 with all the creature comforts that similar black tops offer.
I have a DMax and as you say it has bash plates on the tanks, diff etc, but having had a look through the MUX - it lacks all the fizzy creature comforts.
Their TV advert showing one towing a dual axle caravan and driving at what appeared to be fairly high speed off the sealed road, across roughish grass and pulling up on a cliff top is misleading, to say the least !!
As an aside, Ive just had the 50K log book service for my Max and its not supposed to have an oil change between the major 40K service and the 60K service. I disagree with that idea - if you want your motor to last, change the oil every 10K and regularly check the oil, air and fuel filters and change them as scheduled or before. Needless to say the mechanic (who works mainly on diesels) agreed and the oil and air filter (I'm in dusty conditions at the moment) was replaced

Gday...
Unfortunately that description fits almost all the ads for SUVs on the TV.
The "industry" (and maybe buyers these days) seem to forget that a 4X4 is really a Landcruiser 200/100/80/Prado/Patrol/Pajero/Land Rover, some Jeep models and those utes. The rest are simply mainly AWD SUVs and never designed to get OFF ROAD.
The ads show them leaving the blacktop .. but that is NOT 4X4 offroad
As for towing a van - that is marketing ... not DESIGN ...
Cheers - John

Ok I'll bite....just to start the ball rolling....... Toyota consider and advertise the Prado as an SUV not a full blown 4WD. As Baz says I dont really care as I drive obviously what John does not consider a real 4wd whatever that definition is. I'll now just sit back and have a laugh.

I think you may have misread my comment Dirvine
Prado is in the "real 4x4" list
You can certainly sit back and have a giggle ... but a Prado is a 4X4 designed to be driven in 'serious' offroad conditions.

Agree John I do believe they are too, But Toyota say they are only an SUV and are not advertised as a proper 4WD like they do with Landcruiser ads They advertise it that way. So it seems even the industry cannot seem to understand what a Prado is. I have seen them in some extreeme places and agree they are the full monty 4WD. I have also seen a MUX and the Holden equivelent in some serious 4WD situations. Most often its not the car but the driver and where they place their wheels and what line they try and take. According to 4WD Victoria, until the VW Amorac automatic came out with 8 speeds, a proper 4WD was any vehicle that had a dual range transfer box that drove front and rear wheels. That excluded the AWD type vehicles which is what you refer to as not proper 4WD's. They are considering how to change the "rules" so a VW can be included, but it may become hard given the way their transmission is configured and what other manufacturers may implement to offset this VW point of difference. So again as you can see even the 4WD industry doesn't know what is a proper 4WD
