A Week on Norfolk Island - November 2015

This was our 3rd trip since 2009. We flew Virgin up to Brisbane from Melbourne then Air New Zealand to the island. Our previous two trips were spent staying at beautiful Endeavour Lodge, this time we stayed at Kentia Apartments. The island is only 8kms x 5kms in size but very hilly. A hire car is included when you book a flight/accommodation package. We booked through Norfolk Select Marketing again, they were very friendly & efficient. There are lots of lovely restaurants to dine out at on the island. Kingston is a World Heritage historic area ( Captain Cook). There is a magnificent National Park & Botanic Gardens as well as Reserves all around the spectacular scenic coastline. We walked all the trails doing bird photography. There are charter fishing trips as well as a trip to nearby Phillip Island to walk among the nesting seabirds. The weather is sub-tropical. As usual we had a fabulous time. It was a nice break from dragging a ''box on wheels'' around all the time. One week packages cost around $980 - $1600 per person ex Sydney or Brisbane. You need a Passport. Here are a few photos

Judy uses a Nikon D60 DSLR with a Tamron 150-600mm lens. I use a Sony/Minolta A200 DSLR with a Tamron 150-600mm lens.

We both have Sigma 500mm lenses as well. 

Wildlife/birdlife Photography is our main reason for travelling for around half of every year. We also do macro photography of insects & native flora including native orchids.

It keeps us busy in our retirement while keeping us fit doing a lot of bush walking. Healthy body, healthy mind.

For those looking to venture over there have a look at their calendar. There are all sorts or sporting, dancing, cultural and musical events. Consider attending one of those if you are interested. If not interested then use the calendar to pick quieter times. I went over for the ballroom week a few years ago, must go again.

 We like lots of ''ball room'' & go exclusively in the quieter times. In fact we try to avoid any type of event, anywhere on our travels. We're friendly social people but we don't enjoy crowds.  Each to their own as we always say.

We very much agree that Norfolk Is is a great place to visit.  

Our visit was in 2007.

Just getting there was a 'great' experience.  After spending all day in the Brisbane Departure lounge waiting for cloud to clear from over Norfolk we were sent home & tried again the next day.  By the time we got to Norfolk the cloud cover was back & after 3 abortive hair raising attempts to land we continued on to New Zealand where we again waited in the Departure lounge for several hours before being called back urgently to the Aircraft.  Then sat on the tarmac for an hour or so before taking off once again.  They were just about to give up trying to land when a small hole opened up in the clouds & we came in for a somewhat rushed landing.  Had this not been successful we were to continue on to Brisbane.

Those people waiting at the Airport to leave in our aircraft gave us an almighty cheer.  However their joy quickly evaporated when it was announced that there was not enough clear air for the plane to take off!  They eventually got away next morning after overnighting at the 'Airport'.

 

We stayed in a delightful Norfolk Island Pine cottage strangely called Ponderosa.

Had a fantastic time there & a thankfully uneventful return flight.  Got a part refund from our insurance company too - for the lost day.
