ANTS - how do you stop them?

My uncle used pour a ring of cloudy ammonia around his tent for ants and mozzies. I have a reasonable amount of luck at home with ant-rid.

We use a product called crunchy crawly, but have only been able to get it in QLD, Found another product by Brunnings (NOT Bunnings) - called Ant Kill - spray around tyres, up under wheel arch, etc. - no ants - we had some come in yesterday, sprayed, and all gone now.

The best way to stop ants is to stop people from dropping their grey water on the ground where people camp or stop.
Fairly fundamental.

We just use a surface spray on legs and ropes. Generally the ants don't come up over tyres. Works for me.

once the ants are in a great prouct called talon from woolworths its in a syringe just put a small dot about half the size of a pea near their trail they will swamp it taking it back to the nest to share same principle as ant rid but much cleaner and quicker costs about $7

Wow - Brunnings at Bunnings!!!! Wonder if Bunnings took their name from the Brunnings brand name - who do grass seed, and a lot of products for gardens, I believe.

I would like to contribute to this subject. I broke a couple of the plastic feet on my van stabilisers and bought replacements at the caravan and camping show. These new plastic feet had little moats around them to be filled with water to stop ants crawling up however this water in some places attracted bees. Now i love bees but i don't really want them in my coke can but i found that they don't like soapy water. So the van feet get filled with dish washing liquid with water. Also I have used Hortico ant powder near the ant holes slows them down a bit.

I use a mixture of 2 cups of water to I cup of vinegar and spray it around support legs and jockey wheel.

Have tried talc powder, ant sand, ant rid bait and the vinegar seems to do the same job so far.

I put a ring of petroleum jelly around the power lead and satellite cable which stops them in their tracks.

I also cut off any low hanging tree branches that are touching the van as they can use it as a freeway to come in via the roof.

The first thing I do after setting up the van after having a cup of tea is to clean off the splatted bugs off the front of the van.

Ants use the bugs as a smorgasbord before moving onto the interior of the van.

When camping we don't take any jam, honey or golden syrup as ants radar goes into overdrive if any gets spilt or left on a crust etc that isn't cleaned up straight away.

While camping in the outback we have had a trail of ants heading for the droplets of water in the sink.

My vinegar/water spray mixture around the support legs seems to have the ants under control so far.

Wish I could say the same for possums on the roof at night.

We also use surface spray - but prevention is the best option. NO sugar, jam, honey when camping out, and keep everything scrupulously clean - no crumbs, oil smears etc, and put rubbish, especially food scraps, in the outside bins straight away.

No grey water on the ground at my place, but ants abound.

Perhaps the food bits do attract them at free camps. But I don't free camp.

I leave sugar & borax baits in the van.

Pamela, thanks for the advice about talon. We live next to crown land and have had a problem with ants for years mostly outside, the grand kids have been bitten standing on the driveway often. Last 2 years some have come inside via a light switch. Have tracked a lot of them back a long way into the paddock. Have tried most of the above mentioned also professional spraying. Without even having to track them talon has cut the number of ants down by 95 percent, just put it on their trails.

What a load of bull S##t. We were at a caravan park at Mission Beach in the winter, where all the grey water went into the drainage system and all the people around us had ants invading their vans.

Still happy with Pamela's advice about talon. The ant population has been cut way back, just every few weeks check if ants are back, put a little in there track. Will be taking it when we travel.

Ants must be like us humans ... not all the same (thankfully).

I have long had a problem at home with ants bringing up soil from a crack between the brick wall and the edge of the perimeter path.

I gave it a liberal dose of Ant Sand down the crack & just like magic ... problem gone. At least in that area.

I'll have a look at Talon too.

I don't encourage them by sweeping the van out each day of crumbs and put sugar and sweet things in the fridge. Surface spray around edges or corners of the van inside also helps. Water on the bottom of the stabilizers is also a deterrent.

Keep things clean .. Ant rid or Boric acid and a few teaspoon of sugar in cup of warm water . On cotton wool - buds around the area . They go back and die at home . Killing best .,

i have had a lot of success using Lanolin , this is a natural product- available from Supercheap in spray bottles.
It will leave a sticky residue if sprayed on the stablisers so i spray around each stabiliser leg
the spray bottle allows you to reach behind the wheels in conjunction with Petroleum Jelly around power lead and sullage hose should prevent any ingress of the little critters.

My home ants do not want any aliens when i come home!

Perhaps a bit early to come to a conclusion, but we have had an invasion of those tiny Argentine? ants in our kitchen at home. So I took the advice of Felicia and tried Talon.

Like magic after one application they have gone!

We'll see how long it lasts. Fingers crossed.

Two ways , Fortune500 mixed with water as per directions and sprayed around what ever touches the ground never hada problem also at home borax half table spoon, 1/4cup water, 1/2 cup sugar mix well and place some near their trail repeat again when their mates move in
