Not sure if this is the correct segment of the forum to use "recommendations" but I am utilizing it for the benefits of other Grey Nomads traveling the North West WA looking at places to stay and things to do while in the area.
This is the first post of this nature and I hope to add more from our travels from Perth to Broome and back via Northern Highway taking in the wild flowers (2015)
Instead of staying at Karratha drive down to Dampier and stay at the Dampier Transit Village. Park is old but clean with water views. Maximum stay is 3 nights. 2014/2015 cost was $28pn. Has good shady spots and allows you to refill water tanks. Always busy and you need to phone ahead a few days prior to arriving in the area.
While in the Dampier/Karratha area do a whale watching cruise (Southern Right Whales) with Discovery Cruising run by Brad on the Blue Marlin. Goes out from 9am and returns around 3pm. You will see whales, go snorkelling/swimming, he will dive down and get oysters for you to try and will on the way home put a couple of lines over the back. Cost is $120- per person. We have nothing to do with Brad or Discovery Cruising but had the best day out and a very enlightened, well versed in the history of the area and a good fit for "Grey Nomads".
