dash cams

confuseconfuseconfuseconfuse.Hi all ,Interested to find out if anyone has a dash cam ,what sort ,how much ,ect .Do they take good resolution pictures or videos ,I have looked at a dash cam video from America ,You can get ones that shoot forward ,backwards , record speed, audio ,.In the video people were using them to record conversations when pulled over by the police over there ,seems as if they do not have to give any information when they are pulled over ,as it is in there 4,5,6,7,8,amendments ,the right to remain silent if they have not been charged with an offence.Hope I have got it rite ,rip me to bits if I have not JOHN.

Depends on what you want and what your budget is.
Recording all that information "cuts both ways".
If you are in a crash, the data on YOUR dash cam can be used to prove that YOU were speeding, for instance.

Cheers,
Peter

I have a Navman Drive LM. GPS and Dash Cam all in one.

I am on my fourth one since just before Xmas 2014.

I did had a Navman 358 (Dashcam only) but wanted to have GPS capability as well so bought the Drive LM.

I wanted the Drive LM all in one to save having a two way power adaptor.

I like the Navman stand alone dashcam and with a 32 gig Micro SD card I got about 10 hours of HD recording before it overwrites.

If this latest replacement LM gives up the Ghost I will buy the Navman Dashcam 388 with GPS and revert to my Garmin GPS which I find much more user friendly.

In Qld the Police all record Audio when they stop you nowadays. Problem is they do supply a recording if you are charged and plead not guilty. "BUT" they will not supply any Audio recordings of other people stopped the same day or within the same timeframe.

My stop was in a three Cylinder Daihatsu Charade with two large adults on board and I was charged with exceeding 117KPH on the flat. I honestly had trouble reaching 95 Kph.  I wish at the time I had a dashcam with GPS to disprove the reading the police claimed.

The scuttlebutt is that they "Hold" Over previous speed readings of earlier stops and use them to get their Quota.

In court you cannot ask them about earlier "Stops" or charges laid against other earlier speeding charges.  I was told about Holding over by a serving Policeman so it does happen.

It is almost impossible to fight unless you have your own recordings from your Dashcam and with a GPS and can show you were not speeding or other incident.

Lotsa good ones around ..

like most things, sometimes you gotta pay a bit more to get what you want ..

I've got one of these which is great .. I don't speed .. should I be involved in an accident, my own speed/location/time is all presented ..

Records lots of stuff that you may or may not look at once & then probably forget. Life's short, enjoy the moment & if possible remember it. Preferably in your head not on a dash-cam.

I have a Blackvue DR550GW, superseded now by the DR600

Bought mine couple of years ago on special from here: http://www.autoblackbox.com.au/blackvue-dash-cams/blackvue-dr600gw-hd/

Very happy with the video quality and the data recorded and presented on playback. It records speed/GPS location data/HD video

The unit is very compact and unobtrusive.

Dash cams are not for looking over to see where you have been in your travels.  Cameras & video cameras are for that.

Dash cams are to record details of a crash, theft, attempted insurance scams etc.

The only time I would look at my recorded footage is if there is an incident that I want evidence of.

Cheers Neil

Just bought a Navman MiVue with GPS. Ours was about $220 I think anyway 32gb card gives 9 hrs video loop.

Excellent quality pics GPS location, speed, acceleration/deceleration/side movement. Play back is excellent also as map shows where you were at any point in time.

I think we have to be a bit broad minded here.
I for one hope I never see another accident or even incident as long as I live. Nor do I hope to record conversations with corrupt coppers. But I'm very aware of the number of times I've been too slow getting the camera out, and missed something. If we use our imagination we should be able to think up hundreds of situations where a dash cam could be a positive addition to our travel memories, as well as recording the unfortunate events along the way.
I'll be getting a dash cam.

Do you realize they erase the recording after a preset time i/e amount of data.
I have mine set to record 2 minute loops and store 4 giga bytes.
After that it will record over the oldest file so not meant to be a travel video
If the camera senses an impact it will save that file for ever or you can push a button to do this also

Cheers

If you put a 32GB SD card in, with the better ones with full 1080p recording, you can get up to 5 hours of video on one card. When travelling, we have 4 32GB cards that we swap over at about 4 hour intervals, and download the video to the laptop when it's convenient. But usually you have a stack of boring video between a few minutes of interesting stuff that you need to edit if you want to save it for a trip record. I thought about editing so that the boring stuff gets shown at about 8X or 16X speed till you get to the interesting bit that then plays at normal speed.

I have a Street Guardian that is full 1080P HD quality, and has GPS data recorded as well. The only drawback is the data isn't displayed on the screen along with the video, but it is used by the viewing program and shows your speed and position on a Google map display. I'm hoping that a firmware upgrade will be released to add the data to the video display as well.

On one of our later trips, we saw a police chase where a car had been carjacked and was being pursued by the police. He came past us, when we pulled over to the side of the road, with both front tyres blown out from road spikes, then the 7 police vehicles right behind him. Because they were all only doing about 80 KPH, it was easy for us to stay behind and capture it all on the dash cam. I started to rethink my eagerness to keep up when he finally pulled over and the police all jumped out with guns drawn, smashed in his side window with the but of a gun, and hauled him out onto the ground. We were only about 50M from the action. Then just as they had him handcuffed and being led to one of the police cars, an impatient driver from behind decided to go around myself and the police vehicles, with all the cops still buzzing on adrenalin. I'm surprised he didn't get hauled out of his vehicle as well.

Had I have thought about it earlier, we could have stopped in at Tamworth (it happened about 10K south of there) and seen if the local TV mob wanted the footage. It could have been worth a few bob too, but they'd have had to have deleted the audio track, or done a lot of bleeping out. biggrin

Edited for spelling errors.

hi DT

.. and (FYI) the duration of recording in some cases may also be extended by using a larger SD card .. Mine retains a holding of about 13 running hrs before recycling.

It also has an automatic "standby" capacity which is triggered by movement into recording mode making it an excellent "watchdog" ..

It also comes with (2) cameras .. most convenient !

.. attached is a sample of a recording

got the same Navman model as Baz has, but got it for $169 on special from Dick Smith. These retailers run specials on them about once a month.

Make sure it has good night resolution - cheap=junk - no point in having one if you are driven only by cost.

Ordinary price for a good unit is about $250 or so
