I think we should be able to have a discussion regarding issues such as raising a petition on things that can adverse effect financially without it be labelled political. It's a means of bouncing ideas without necesserally having a political overtone.
Doesn't matter what the tax is or what it's called, those at the bottom of the food chain will pay for it. Wage & salary earners and self-funded retirees just have to grin and bear tax. Every tax floats down to the consumer eventually. GST (consumption tax) was supposed to make every one pay their fare share and stop the black-market economy. State based taxes were supposed to disappear too given that the GST is collected by the Federal Govt and distributed to the states who seem to squander it, no matter what political party is in at the state level.
Until the top rate of tax is the same company tax, high-flyers will do well. Even Lindsay Fox said he doesn't pay tax. What he does is claim as expenses everything he buys and the company then pays company tax (30% ?) on that. He's often said that's a loophole that needs plugging, Trouble is many politicians spouses are using that loophole. Not sure what the breakeven point is but at some salary (used be $120,000) the sliding tax scale equals the flat company tax rate. So if you earn over the break-even point, you live off company expenses and the company pays your reduced tax.
Many years ago in the uk, the dreaded VAT (value added tax) was introduced, It was 8% and was mandated never to increase, it is now 20%, do I trust these parasitical pollies ? no way. Here in oz it was brought in at 10%, again never to rise, yeh right.
Anyone that thinks this is ok has rocks in their heads IMO.
Thanks for the suggestion, deverall11. However, I feel that a thread about the taxation policy of the government (or the opposition) or a call to action to raise a petition about a proposed policy, constitutes a political discussion. In our experience, these kinds of threads end in bad feelings, personal attacks or feelings of exclusion and frustration by members and visitors. We would like our forum to be a positive and inclusive place ... mainly to discuss the grey nomad lifestyle. While we do offer subforums where other kinds of topics can be discussed, we have stated in our forum rules that politics and religion should be avoided. I hope you understand.
