We are heading up to the mainland end of Feb for a month, going up to Robinvale and then back down towards Adelaide
In Tassie we don't have to cover our self for Ambulance and neither does any one coming down on holiday, but we have been told we will ,or would be better to up on the big island,Is there one cover for all ,or do we have to do it state by state
My wife and I have cover with AHM Health Insurance, which covers us both in all of Australia.
The details below show the basic information which I received in March.
The web site is www.ahm.com.au
A look at the site will give you more information.
We spent a month ( just after Christmas till late January 2014), in Tasmania at a meet up of my son in laws family, who all come from there.
Had a great time apart from the 3rd week when we got all the seaons in one week.
Have a safe and enjoyable trip.
Regards
Colin

Thank you for choosing ahm.
We're all about providing no-nonsense health insurance to over half a million members. As a result of the rising cost of health care, and so we can continue to cover our members' claims, ahm's premiums will increase from 1 April 2015. This is part of the Health Industry's annual review and has the Federal Government's approval. Get more information here
Your premium from 1 April 2015
Your cover:
Ambulance Cover
Current premium:
$160.30 each year
New premium:
$173.60 each year
This is an increase of $13.30 per year and reflects your cover at 02 March 2015 (although the actual amount may vary by a few cents due to rounding).
Your new premium includes a reduction of $102.40 which is the Australian Government Rebate on private health insurance. Your previous rebate was $101.30.
Hi Cowboy, In Vic. pensioners with a valid pension card don't need ambulance cover as emergency transport is free, but transport from original hospital to one closer to home is not. Why, oh why are you going up there to Robinvale in FEB., average temp. is 39 or 40 degrees at that time. Adelaide also will be scorching at that time of year. Hope you have a good air conditioner. By the way, I am negotiating to buy a house on 5 acres in Smithton with a lovely garden. Thanks for your advice when I first got to Tassie. .... Val
The entire insurance industry is hard to understand I would ring the state services you intend to visit and get the correct info. Some States only offer free pensioner services to pensioners in that state Some will cover inter hospital transfer while others require a full specialist report before they will move you back home. Also you may want to check if your vehicle insurance will cover recovery of your vehicle and van back to your home if the driver is the one in hospital My NSW vehicle insurance with the NRMA does and I think GIO are planning a similar service to that of the NRMA All food for thought before setting out

That's why they're checking that they have ambulance cover just in case they get heat stroke.

Hi Cowboy, As Wombat says the whole insurance industry is hard to understand (probably by design) but basically membership appears to be a state by state proposition. This link may help www.ambulance.vic.gov.au/Membership/FAQs.html
Local member office is a good start to find out what your covered in other states , But has other have said we don't know your full situation , So could get some wrong information
We were in Tassie Wife was taken ill up at Poatina. We were told that ambulance would be free so we called them. They arrived and took her to Launceston Hosp. We found out that the ambulance treatment was free but the transport to Hospital was not and we ended up with a large bill. Have had ambulance cover since. Wife was transported from Weipa to Cairns by RFD - no charge just a letter wishing her well for her recovery. The ambulance bill from Cairns Airport to Cairns Hospital was over $900. Ambulance cover is very cheap but ambulance transport is very expensive.
Check with private health company as Ambulance cover on private health only covers emergency life threatening situations. Hubby had a bad fall & broke leg in 2 places & his ankle. It was not covered by our private health & we got a bill for $900 and we are only 7mins from hospital! Luckly we also have St Johns cover so the bill was cancelled. Our private health & St Johns cover means we are fully covered around the country.
In Qld. the ambulance cost heaps. It was the flight by helicopter 400ks that was no charge.........I received a bill for $11,000 that I was to claim on private health insurance if I had it. Otherwise ignore the bill. As I had no private health cover I ignored it.
