Say NO to the GST rise
Permalink Closed

I think we should start a partition , protesting against the federal government proposed increase to the GST.

Its the one tax that could really impact on the grey nomad budget. If we were to turn the combined power of the baby boomers against this Tax Im sure the government would re- think their strategy. At least until after the next election

Never let the truth interfere with a good story!

But an extra 5% on the yearly budget could have a dramatic effect on most peoples travelling ability

I'm with you tezza.

There's plenty of political forums out there. Leave the politics to them.

Cindy doesn't want political stuff on here so we should all stick to that rule.

I agree leave the protesting to street level politics

If  the government wants to look at taxes then let them put a stop to scams like Chevron Aust ,an arm of the USA parent company, who for the past ten years have paid on average a mere $248.00 tax per year on their LNG Australian operations. When we consider that every litre of gas they extract goes overseas nothing to the OZ market we have been ripped off yet again .

On the original question just consider another 5% on everything you need to travel let alone live at home.    In effect you need to come up with 5% onto of what you spend now  .  They do say there will be compensation for those on the low income end but that remains to be seen .  It would be a good exercise to just  take note of what you spend today and in 12 months after any rise do it again    I do advise you sit down before you do the final calculation

If you're traveling on a shoestring budget it will make a difference. Others a slight difference. How about getting all these multi-national companies that pay no or very little tax to cough up? Instead of squeezing the juice out of all of us.

I'd like to start a partition, too. Something like the Hutt River Province ...

Ironically, the guy who is heading the tax "reform" debate is a multi-millionaire who stashes his wealth in a tax haven. Why is it always the working class that ends up carrying these parasites on their backs?

It's the old story, we want everything but are not prepared to pay for it.

I'm certainly in favour of a rise in the GST, 2.5% would be good, 5% even better.

Will leave the discussion of partitions to the home handy men among us.smile

G'day. Thought I would get my 2 bobs worth in before this gets closed. The GST can only be raised with the approval of ALL States and Territories.Do you think that all State and Territory Governments can agree on anything?
Cheers

Hi all,
I am closing this now as we are keen to avoid political discussions on this forum.  Thanks for your understanding.
