While you're waiting for any suggestions from people with personal experience, try checking some of the details in these from Google

In our experience there are not too many ''free camps'' in trendy areas like this.

Not much in the in the way free camps in the Margaret area evenwithout dog. Only one I know is Alexandra Bridge few Kms south east direction.

Probably the best close to MR with dog would be BigValley Campground, type of farm stay/CP @ about $25/n unpowered. Powered more of course.
Should be in camps 8 and is on Wiki Camps.

There is a camp area at Cane Break Pool that permits dogs on a leash. Has toilets and a swimming area. There is a small fee, same as NP fees. About 40 Klms from Margaret River and Busselton on Margaret River. We have camp host there and find a  really nice area. Lots of birds and is a nursery area for the Black ****atoos. If you follow Chapman hill Rd out of Busselton you end up there. Be careful as the road continues  to the right at a T junction at one point just to confuse everybody.

G'day

Others here are quite correct in stating that the Margaret River Shire proudly announces that they do not permit "Freedom-Camping" within the shire
They do however put out a brochure called "Camping information - Shire of Augusta / Margaret River"

I recommend you download a copy - it is very useful

One of the biggest reasons - I am advised- for their 'no-camping' policy is issues with backpackers .... however they want large numbers of backpackers for fruit picking and other rural jobs coz they don't have to pay them heaps ...

If you can drag yourself a little bit inland from Margaret River to say, the Perth to Albany hwy region, there are plenty of RV Friendly towns where you can stay overnight for low-cost or free. This might help you along the way

We stayed at Big Valley Campsite about 12klm SE of Margaret River in December /January. Cost was about $30pn. Whilst not a free camp it is a 'bush camp' The owners are actually sheep farmers. Dogs are allowed, and you have a wonderful area to exercise them. Check out Wiki for comments. cost does not fluctuate between seaons and amenities and camp kitchen excellent. If staying over Xmas / New Year ring as very popular. Also see Camps 7 WA site 213.

Thanks, guys, for all your help. We are now staying at the Big Valley Campsite, which is absolutely delightful!
