A mining company is exploring potash deposits on Lake MacKay. They have already capped sand hills on the remote Balgo to Kiwirrkurra track to accommodate their vehicles, and the Gary Junction Road east of Kiwirrkurra has recently had an upgrade. They intend to truck the Potash to Alice Springs via Gary Junction Road and Tanami Road.
for a change, a good news story for the mining industry and its staff. In WA 16% of mining staff are now unemployed and on the dole. The 2nd highest after the under 20's in western Sydney in the country

And the only ones to benifit from this very expensive upgrade will be the mining company's. I know remote communitys use the road, but per kilometre travelled it will be the hole diggers hands down.

If it goes ahead it will be the first project to come from the $ Billions in revenue and profits to come out of the industry. Always concerned when a mining company does anything of a community nature 9 out of 10 times when it all falls in to disrepair or outlives it's usefulness it always falls back onto the Australian tax payer to maintain it or remediate the area after the miners have left or gone into liquidation.
I am amazed at where the $billions of $billions have gone from the mining boom revenue . Labor couldn't have spent it all surely. I can't think of one major infrastructure project that has been fully funded from the huge amount of dollars the industry paid in to the State and Federal Governments slush funds
