A stall holder at the recent Canberra Caravan and Camping show, told me that I drove a Whizzbang, after I described my WV Campervan. Is this a derogatory term?
Listen to the noise it makes when you slam the side door. Whiiiiizzzzz BANG!
At any free camp or even in some van parks the (mostly) overseas tourists / backpackers love the sound and will open & close the door HARD a dozen times a night.
Every time they enter or exit the car they feel the need to slam the door, much to the annoyance of others.
Don't be offended if yours is called that, if you are not an offender then it will be an affectionate term.

It's used as a derogatory term quite often but not always. A lot of hire vans used by backpackers are ''whiz bangs''. Quite a few folk like blaming backpackers for just about everything at ''free camps'' including the noise created by them closing the door of their hire van. We call people that constantly wash their vans & cars to keep up appearances ''water wasters''. We call people that participate in happy hour every day ''alcoholics''. We call people with white fluffy dogs ''lap doggers''. We call people that have to have a campfire ''pyromaniacs''. Everyone gets called something. Each to their own. WAIT FOR IT!

WE don't care what people call us as long as it's not ''late for dinner''. We have a few other names for people, like those that sneak in & out of donation, small community CP's without paying. ''stealth campers'' or even ''thieves'' springs to mind. Lots of those around from our observations. Giving the rest of us honest folk a bad name.

I proved it is impossible to shut my whizz bang sliding door if it is not slammed heavily.
Cheryl who I am travelling with at the moment, tried 3 times to close it with no luck. I SLAMMED it and it closed properly. Maybe the fault is with the manufacturer and not the drivers.
Thankfully I have an inbuilt toilet, once door closed for the night it stays closed.

I'm with you HW, it is better for one big slam than several light slams that do not work. It is the nature of the beast. And yes, I do keep my door tracks clean and lubricated etc.
Like you, mine with few exceptions stays closed after about 9PM....
When I requested a site away from other caravans citing the whizz bang as the reason, he told me that others are just as noisy with their types of rig (car doors slamming, motors running, hooking up, loud voice etc early in the morning sometimes before dawn) and my money was as good as theirs and not to worry about it.
So apart from being as considerate as I can, I have as much right for the use of my rig as others have for theirs.

I agree Marj. Mine is also impossible to close properly unless I slam it...
But on the plus side, I don't need to open the door during the night either.

Vic, I had a similar experience up North earlier this year when I requested a site a bit away from caravans.
The C P owner told me that everyone makes some noise so not to worry about it. As far as I know there were no complaints.

It all boils down to tolerance and consideration Pam, and that goes for all types of RV's irrespective.
Apparently whizz bangs were a derogatory comment for the cheap and poorly maintained vans that overseas packpackers used a few years ago. The side door needed to be slammed shut to get it to even move and shut properly.
Nowdays there are many new RVs which fit into the category whizz bang. The sliding door is heavy and needs to be pulled shut with a little "force" and of course it creates the whizz noise and when it does engage into the shut and locked position, we get the bang noise.
There is simply no way of avoiding this no matter how much care the door closer may take

I use to have a camper van with the whizzbang sliding door. Only once someone complained, so I sprayed with WD40 and it half solved the problem. I then became more careful how I shut it, tried my best to do it quietly.
As you found Lesley, to close a sliding van door quietly is pretty much impossible. Its nice to hear to tried to minimize the noise. There are some that don't care how much noise they make - but then we have noisy gennies, people talking loudly in CPs at the crack of dawn going to the toilets and showers, loud TVs or drinkers/laughers outside having late night 5 o'clockers. Plenty of others without whizz bangs who make a lot of inconsiderate noise late at night or early in the morning :)
